Dickey Nutt given contract extension

Southeast Missouri State men's basketball coach Dickey Nutt has agreed to a new contract that will run through the 2016-17 season, athletic director Mark Alnutt announced in a press release Wednesday.

Nutt's previous contract was set to expire after next season.

"I'm very excited about the direction of our men's basketball program," Alnutt said in the release. "I firmly believe that Coach Nutt has laid a solid foundation for this program to be a contender in the OVC on an annual basis.

"Our ultimate goal is to win an OVC championship. We achieve that by building a program the right way, recruiting high character student-athletes who leave Southeast with their degrees and having a coaching staff that abides by NCAA rules and regulations. I look forward to continuing to work with Coach Nutt as he prepares for the upcoming season and beyond."

Southeast finished 18-14 this season and secured a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the fourth year in a row.

The Redhawks had a winning season for the second year in a row, which was something that had not happened in 13 years, and their 18 wins were the most since the 2000-2001 season.

"I can't begin to tell you how excited I am with the new contract," Nutt said. "I am most appreciative that Dr. Dobbins and Mr. Alnutt have the confidence in me to continue building this program to higher grounds. I do believe that our future is bright and this only enhances our efforts in reaching our goals."

Really?? One year would have been sufficient...I am not excited, but, at least it wasn't a colossal mistake like Samuels deal when he got that fluke season...

I'm glad he got one from a recruiting standpoint. I'm surprised it was a two year and not a one year extension. I would expect to continue to see improvement in the program

This will drive Billiken up the wall! I think it's very reasonable without committing to a real long-term deal, while still providing Nutt and staff the ability to show there is now stability which is obviously another recruiting tool. Should they continue to improve I would think another 1-2 year extension beyond will be considered to help keep it rolling. Let's hope that's exactly what happens b/c then we'll be talking about 20+ win seasons and post season tourneys.

Grussman's wishful thinking is nice to see but 20 win seasons with DNutt is not happening. SEMO will never on par with Murray State or Belmont as long as Nutt is the HC. Nutt was the right choice to fix the program but he is not the right choice to see this team succeed. He has a very highly rated team before the season started and he ****** it away. How much longer will this nepotism last? Does he have anymore family members he can give a roster spot too?
