The Poplar Bluff Mules soccer team grabbed its 14th win on Wednesday in a 1-0 stunner over Farmington, the district’s top seed, for the program’s most wins since 2015.

But before they can celebrate, they have to focus on the task at hand which is the Class 5, District 1 Tournament that begins Saturday in Hillsboro.

The Mules will take on Sikeston at 11:30 a.m., a team Poplar Bluff beat 2-1 earlier this season at home.

Even though Wednesday’s game against Farmington is a potential semifinal matchup next Tuesday, Poplar Bluff coach Rusty Crafton said he wanted his team to give it their all.

“I said bring the intensity,” he said to his team. “Bring it and just play your hearts out. Last home game and a great way to lead into districts with a win.”

Crafton said his team had a chip on their shoulder after being named the No. 4 seed in the district tournament with the Mules defeating two of the top three seeds, shutting out both.

“I think we had a couple good practices before and I think just the mentality,” Crafton said ahead of the matchup. “These guys are ready to prove we can compete with anybody. I think us getting the No. 4 seed, them giving us the No. 4 seed, kind of added fuel to the fire.”

The Mules are looking for their first district tournament win since that historic 2015 season where that year they took down Sikeston in the opening round.

“Keep the mentality of what we’re doing and keep focused,” Crafton said was the plan. “I think these are ready for a district championship.”
