SIKESTON — It has been over one month since Oran last tasted defeat.

Chemistry is sky-high, which has led to 12 straight wins for the Eagles. That trend continued on Friday night, as the Eagles soared to a 91-71 win over Scott County Central in the championship game of the Scott County-Mississippi County Conference Tournament.

Jacob Shoemaker got the ball rolling for the Eagles, scoring on his first two shot attempts of the game. He finished with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Todd Priggel and Ty Johnson also contributed in the opening quarter, as each player went on a personal 6-0 run in the frame.

“The kids came out ready to play,” Oran head coach Joe Shoemaker said. “We knew we had to match their intensity, and on their floor is a tough battle. We made a couple of baskets; Jacob hit a couple early and got our intensity going. I thought we controlled the boards really well early in the game, and that was a big difference for us.”

As time expired in the first quarter, Scott County Central’s Keshawn Sanders banked in a 3-pointer and drew the foul, setting up a four-point play. Sander’s though did not convert on the free-throw, and Oran (21-1) headed to the second quarter up 32-14.

Shoemaker then showed off his defensive prowess to start the second quarter, as the senior, created a pair of turnovers and turned them into transition buckets. He finished the first half with 15 points and shot 6 of 11 from the floor.

“I was feeling good,” Jacob Shoemaker said. “I’m always nervous about getting out there and starting strong. It’s always something I try to work on, and we did a good job of it today. It feels good when you get a lead at their place.”

Overall, the Eagles finished the half red hot, shooting 22 of 40 (55 percent) from the field.

Priggel and Tyson Goodale also had strong halves in their own right.

Priggel shot 7 of 11 from the floor, for 16 points. He finished with a game-high 30 points.

Goodale shot 5 of 9 from the floor, for 11 points, while cleaning up four missed shots as well. Goodale finished with 17 points and nine boards.

“We got in a spot where we hit several shots in a row, and we were attacking the rim,” Shoemaker said. “We had one little stretch where we shot two or three threes in a row that missed, where we probably should have attacked the rim, but you’ll live with that. I can’t complain about the efficiency in the first half.”

Down 20 points, at halftime, Scott County Central came out of the break with something to prove.

The Braves went on a 15-8 run that stretched for nearly the entire third quarter, led by Sanders. Sanders scored eight points during that stretch, and finished with a team-high 27 points, while also grabbing five rebounds.

Settling down and not playing at a faster tempo than they should, is what Scott County Central head coach Matt Cline credited to his team’s run.

“We just settled down a little bit and didn’t turn the ball over,” Cline said. “I felt like we spotted them a 20-point lead at the beginning of the game. Weak passes, not running little press breakers and little things like that and spot them a 20-point lead and I felt like in the second half, we kind of played with them, but we were down so much, that it really didn’t make much of a difference.”

The Braves finished with 21 turnovers for the game, 10 of which came in the first quarter, as they could not figure out a way to get into a rhythm against Oran.

Game planning against the Eagles is a tough task. Coming into the game, Cline said that he thinks what they have is special.

“They’re just good,” Cline said. “Joe is doing a great job with them. I think they give the most consistent effort of about any team we’ve played all year. I’ve watched them quite a few times, between Christmas tournament and the Oran tournament, and this tournament and I feel like they give the most consistent effort of any team I’ve seen in Southeast Missouri.”

Friday’s win marks 13-straight for the Eagles, the longest streak since the 2012-2013 season when Oran one 10 games in a row.

“The kids are playing hard,” Shoemaker said. “They got a lot of desire to win. They are very unselfish; they don’t care who scores; it doesn’t matter to them, and the thing is, they communicate and get along so well. They’re able to get on to each other and not pout about it and sulk; they take it and get better. That’s something I really commend this group for; whether it be someone saying something to someone else, they all know that we’re in it together.”
