MISSOURIAN STATE CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: Saxony Lutheran's Cornelius wins Class 2 championship

Saxony Lutheran junior cross country runner Caleb Cornelius captured the Class 2 Boys Cross Country championship on Saturday in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Saxony Lutheran's Caleb Cornelius capped off his stellar junior cross country season with a Class 2 state championship.

Cornelius finished first in 16 minutes, 22.55 seconds to be crowned the Class 2 boys individual state champion at the Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City, Missouri.

"Honestly even from last year -- after going to state last year -- it really was a goal for this year to take a state title," Cornelius said.

It was the ninth first-place finish for Cornelius this season, which includes wins at the Heartland/SEMO Small Schools Conference and Class 2 District 1 meets. His first-place finish at the state meet helped elevate Saxony to ninth place in the team standings.

"As a season, I think I did very well," Cornelius said. "I accomplished all the goals I wanted to do. Yeah, I think it was a very successful season, and I'm really looking forward to track season and next cross country season, really."

St. Vincent junior Joseph Baer placed 10th with a time of 17:19.93 as the Indians clinched fourth place in the team standings.

On the girls side, St. Vincent senior Corin Carroll took 15th place with a time of 20 minutes, 54.09 seconds to help propel the Indians to sixth place in the final team scores. Freshman teammate Genevieve Lipe followed Carroll in 32nd place in 21:29.61 minutes.

Fatima senior Brianna Haller won the girls race with a time of 18 minutes, 50.44 seconds. The Comets were also crowned the Class 2 girls state champions while Lamar clinched the boys' state championship.

Top 25 individual finishers earn All-State honors.

Class 3

Notre Dame's Blake Morris and Benton Keran each finished in the top 10 in the boys race at the Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Morris, a sophomore, posted an eighth-place time of 16 minutes, 41.08 seconds while junior teammate Keran was right behind him in ninth place with a time of 16:42.93.

Edward Wilhite, a senior from Warrensburg, was the first runner to cross the finish line in 15 minutes, 42.27 seconds to help catapult the Tigers to second place in the team standings behind defending champion and powerhouse Festus.

In the girls division, Bulldogs senior Alaina Baumgart posted a 14th-place time of 20 minutes, 4.95 seconds. John Burroughs freshman Kylie Goldfarb claimed the state title, running the race in 19:00.54 minutes. Festus clipped Jefferson County rival Herculaneum by two points to come away with the state championship in the girls race as well.

Notre Dame did not qualify as a team after missing the state cut in its district meet.

Jackson junior Kennedy Bauer finished in the top 20 with an 18th-place time of 19 minutes, 29.03 seconds to fare the best among local participants at the state meet at the Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City.

Senior teammate Margo Motes landed in 77th, running the race in 20:41.17 minutes.

Blue Springs South senior Victoria Findley won the girls division with a time of 18 minutes, 9.34 seconds while Park Hill South claimed the state championship team title.

On the boys side, Jackson senior Ean Buffington finished 39th in 16:41.76 minutes. Cape Girardeau Central junior Jared Neikirk was the only other local runner, and finished in 17 minutes, 45.85 seconds.

Blue Springs senior Victor Mugeche got first place in the boys division with a time of 15 minutes, 29.13 seconds to help lead the Wildcats to the team title.

No local teams qualified for the state meet.

Oak Ridge freshman Mason Keith finished 33rd with a time of 18 minutes, 15.88 seconds as the Bluejay boys ended their season with a seventh-place finish in the state meet at the Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Sophomore teammate Tanner Schamburg was the second Oak Ridge runner to cross the finish line with a 45th-place time of 18 minutes, 33.36 seconds.

Hermitage senior Easton Sabala won the state championship with a time of 16 minutes, 43.33 seconds.

On the girls side, Chaffee senior Alyssa Lunsford landed in 59th place with a time of 23 minutes, 37.74 seconds to fare the best among local athletes. Zalma sophomore Lindsey Umfleet was not too far behind Lunsford in 62nd place with a time of 23:39.96 minutes.

South Nodaway junior Ashley Riley won the girls' race and was the only runner to finish under 20 minutes in the girls division, running the race in 19:55.53 minutes.

The New Haven boys and West Platte girls were crowned the state champions.
