MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Oran baseball holds off Advance in district semifinals

Todd Priggel finished 2-for-3 and drove in two runs to help lead the second-seeded Oran baseball team to a 4-2 victory over third-seeded Advance in a semifinal of the Class 1 District 2 Tournament on Monday in Oran, Mo.

Priggel also pitched 5 2/3 innings to come away with the win for Oran (14-4). He allowed two earned runs on three hits and recorded nine strikeouts and no walks.

Senior Dawson Mayo went the distance on the mound to take the loss for Advance, which closed out its season with a record of 10-14. He gave up one earned run, struck out five and walked two. He also hit a two-run home run to lead the Hornets at the plate.

Oran moves on to face top-seeded Bell City in the district final at 4 p.m. today. The Eagles won the previous meeting between the two teams in a 3-2 decision on May 8.

Cole Nichols blasted a triple, two doubles and had three RBIs, as the two-time defending Class 1 state champion and top-seeded Cubs blistered the fifth-seeded Braves in a semifinal of the Class 1 District 2 tournament.

Chase Dembowski went the distance on the mound to get the win for Bell City (16-6). He had six strikeouts and walked two batters.

Landon Glueck pitched two innings to take the loss for Scott County Central, which finished its season with a record of 3-11. He allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on five hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Bryan McNeely finished 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, as the second-seeded Rams cruised past the third-seeded Tigers in a semifinal of the Class 3 District 1 tournament at Hillhouse Park in Charleston, Missouri.

Layne Prince and Dylan Keller each had a single and a double for Scott City (20-5), while Ryan Wilfawn added a double. Scott City pounded out 10 hits in the game and didn't commit a single strikeout at the plate.

Braden Cox pitched five innings to secure the win on the mound for the Rams. He struck out six batters and didn't issue a walk, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Christian Dudley was tagged with the pitching loss for Caruthersville (13-7). He threw 1 1/3 innings and gave up 12 runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks.

Blake Irions had a single and a triple with three RBIs to lead the Tigers' offense, while Bryce Strawn added a single and a triple.

Scott City moves on to face top-seeded Portageville in the district final at 5 p.m. today. The two teams met earlier this season on April 14 when the Bulldogs claimed a 13-1 win in the Malden Invitational Tournament.

Mitchell Proctor had a double for one of the fifth-seeded Hawks' two hits in the five-inning season-ending loss to the top-seeded Bulldogs in a semifinal of the Class 3 District 1 tournament.

Starting pitcher Nathan Vicenzi took the loss for Kelly, allowing 10 earned runs on seven hits with no strikeouts and three walks. The Hawks ended their season with a 12-10 record.

Nick Allred was the winning pitcher for Portageville (18-7). He threw four innings, during which he gave up no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks. He also drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.

Hunter Gates tripled twice and tallied four RBIs for Portageville, which advanced to today's district championship game.

Class 1 District 1 Individuals Tournament

Notre Dame duo Andrew West and Isaac Hopkins prevailed in their doubles match to advance to the next round of competition in Sikeston.

The two Bulldogs edged a pair from St. Pius X (Festus) to move on to the state competition, which will be held May 26-27 in Springfield, Mo.

Grant Grove had a team-high six kills to help guide the Bulldogs past the Cougars in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Class 3 District 4 Tournament in O'Fallon, Mo.

Hunter Tucker added five kills for Notre Dame (14-11-2), while Evan Landewee contributed four kills and 10 assists. Sam Dohogne chipped in three kills and three aces for the Bulldogs.

Notre Dame advanced to take on Living Word (O'Fallon) Christian in a district semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will move on to the district championship game later in the evening.
