  • Nothing to say it was a beat down

  • I agree. The biggest game in Southeast Missouri Basketball and not a word, paragraph or column. Maybe Semoball thinks everyone watched it on TV.

  • Sikeston put Class 5 on notice with that performance. For reference NMCC beat Class 5 #2 St. Mary’s by 6.

  • Bring back Rachel Crader. Those were the semoball glory days.

  • The Sikeston sportswriter was there, took notes, photos and conducted interviews. However, other company business delayed him in writing up the game report and he let the coaches know after the game. I witnessed him tell them so. Sometimes stuff like this happens. Be patient.

I was there as an independent photographer only, but I hung around afterwards to say hi to the Sikeston coaches as well as old friends from both Sikeston and NMCC.

  • Here's my writeup on the game, but it's just my version off memory. I was only there as an independent photographer.

    Bulldogs fend off Eagles

Five players combine for 135 points with D1 colleges in attendance

    BY MICHAEL BOYD JR.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A night filled with 169 total points, rim-hanging slam dunks, crazy layups, NBA-range 3-pointers, more technical fouls, and actively-loud fanbases complete with a fan ejection, Sikeston stayed undefeated on the season with a thrilling 90-76 victory over defending Class 3 state champion New Madrid County Central on Tuesday.

The P.J. Farmer-Jadis Jones show lived up to all the hype — a combined 63 points between them — but the Bulldogs (22-0) pulled away midway from their SEMO Conference rival in the much-anticipated battle of No. 1-ranked basketball programs.

With the Sikeston Fieldhouse at standing-room-only capacity after a very-long line of fans turned away, the two stars and their respective supporting casts each dazzled all who were lucky to gain entrance, including recruiters from Memphis, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State to name a few, plus a plethora of media coverage.

On the very court that now honors his name, Sikeston head coach Gregg Holifield claimed career win No. 599 — his 501st at Sikeston — and was honored before this game for earning his 500th Bulldog victory four days earlier against Cape Central.

Both fanbases rocked the “Dog Dome” in the first half, but the Bulldogs hushed the Eagle crowd after intermission, slowly pulling away down the stretch.

Sikeston outscored the Eagles 42-28 in the middle quarters and cruised from there.

NMCC (22-2) found itself in serious foul trouble and spent a small portion of the second half fussing about it to officials, enough to receive two technicals on standout B.J. Williamson and head coach Dontre Jenkins.

Sikeston had 16 fouls called on them, while Eagles were whistled for 19.

The host led 27-24 after one quarter, 49-38 at halftime and 69-52 heading into the final eight minutes.

Sikeston’s Farmer and NMCC’s Jones got plenty of help from their supporting casts with five total players in double figures.

Farmer posted a game-high 32 points with a 3-pointer for the Class 5 ’Dogs. He scored 23 in the first half but only had two points in the fourth quarter.

Dontrez Williams added 27 points with three 3s. He had 16 points in the second half.

Tristan Wiggins scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Jones, who fouled out, was relentless himself with 31 points and a trey for the Eagles, scoring 10 points in the fourth.

Williamson posted 28 points with three 3s, with 15 points coming in the first half.

Sikeston struggled from the foul line late in the game, but finished 15 for 21 overall from it. NMCC was 11 for 14 from the charity stripe with Jones going 8 for 10 from it.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, both losses came at the hand of Sikeston, which won the first meeting 72-70 in the SEMO Conference Tournament championship game on Dec. 8 — a game that also saw plenty of dunks by both squads, plus several technical fouls for NMCC.

The Eagles, who saw their 17-game winning streak snapped, close up the regular season when they host Cape Central (14-8) for conference action at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Bulldogs host Caruthersville Thursday, and wrap up conference play at Jackson Friday, both at 6 p.m.

  • Who does PJ Farmer have offers from? Is he 6'2?

-- Posted by Randy Brown on Fri, Feb 16, 2024, at 6:47 AM
  • Randy, PJ has offers from SEMO, Mizzou, Ole Miss, SLU and others. He is being looked at by colleges like Memphis, Alabama, and others. And yes he is 6’2.

  • Farmer sprained his ankle midway through 3rd quarter against Jackson, didn't return. hopefully he recovers in time for districts. he was down on the floor for quite a while before he got up, any word on how bad a sprain it is?

    -- Posted by stork12 on Sat, Feb 17, 2024, at 10:40 PM
  • Stork12, he sprained it pretty good, swelling and sore still but will be good for districts. You will likely not see him Tuesday vs Doniphan, but would expect him to be back playing against Father Tolton on Thursday. He’s a tough kid for sure.

  • Farmer is not playing Thursday vs Tolton!

-- Posted by That Dude on Wed, Feb 21, 2024, at 1:11 PM
  • That Dude, you are correct. It appears the sprain is more severe than expected. Gonna be a tough matchup with Tolton without him. Their backcourt is arguably the best in Missouri.

He just scored 28 points with that “severely sprained ankle”
