With Woodard on the mound? A very good chance I would say.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Wed, May 23, 2012, at 10:20 AM
  • Oran vs. Naylor should be a very good game. I think both teams will have trouble hitting the starters so, it could be a 9 inning 0-0 game and then I think Oran has the edge. If I remember correctly, Woodard pitched an inning in their last game so he only has 9 left. For Oran, Moore and Elfrink have 7 and 6 innings left I think.

-- Posted by deadred on Wed, May 23, 2012, at 10:39 AM
  • *

    They both have 6.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Wed, May 23, 2012, at 10:45 AM
  • Both Elfrink and Moore threw under 60 pitches. I could see Elfrink possibly throwing the first three and Moore coming in for the last four. Who knows, Wood might start Ressel or let him throw some point during the game if either's pitch count gets too high.

I think both teams will put runs on the board today but yes, it will be low scoring IMO.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Wed, May 23, 2012, at 11:13 AM
  • The Kennett-Lutheran South game has been moved to Friday at 4 p.m. to avoid a conflict with Kennett's High School graduation.

  • someone help me understand, please. I understand th district tourny was in cape, then kennett plays park hills at their place, now we tavel to play again on the road??? Westminister is ranked 1st in the state , ND was 2nd we beat them, kennett is ranked 3rd and yet we continue to play road games? I know state rankings dont factor in the brackets but there has to be a better way. What determines who is home and who travels, dont want to complain I just want to understand it all, any help would be appreciated.

If neither team has hosted the sectional, it goes to the top or bottom of the bracket, depending on the year. Lutheran South must have played @ Lutheran North yesterday.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Wed, May 23, 2012, at 12:19 PM
  • Even year(2012) = equals even districts host sectionals. Then this year the bottom side of the bracket hosts the quarter if neither team hosted sectional.

  • Elfrink was sticking all this week, I hope Oran wins it all, the west has owned the State title we need 1 back in SEMO. SEMO owns basketball we need to get some baseball titles now.

    -- Posted by CoachMathis44 on Wed, May 23, 2012, at 9:20 PM
  • Elfrink hit well against cooter and also had a clutch single against naylor that scored a run but if I'm not mistaken and i very well could be but i think he struck out twice looking against naylor and also had an error that allowed a run to score. In my opinion he's just a very streaky hitter and probably the worst base runner on the team. But on a good note, on paper Elfrink is prolly the best pitcher for oran

  • Oran's biggest problem at the state level IMO is the kids nerves once they get there and not looking at each game as just another game. It seems we tend to overcome this in the 3rd place game as we have never took 4th. I'm hoping this will not be a factor this year as they have 5 starters back from last year's team that went to state and have been there before. The last time Oran went to state in back to back years was '03 and '04 and they took 2nd both times, so that's something to build off of coming into this year's state run. Regardless, they need to leave it all out on the field as Santa Fe is going to be a tough out.

As far as Elfrink, the kid has raw talent up and down the baseball field. I would love to know his average since the first of May. He has been nothing but clutch. Pitching wise, he is inconsistent at times but statistical wise, he is the best pitcher on the team right now. His defense is above average IMO. What he lacks there if anything is his mental capacity at times to know what to do. Other than that, he has been a HUGE part on this year's team.

I also honestly believe if Oran would have won a title the first two or three times they went back in the late 90s, Oran would have multiple state championships and we would not be discussing the multiple "choke" jobs.

  • getting to state and not winning it all...is never a choke job....it takes a lot to win there....hardwork, execution, and a lotta luck too...Good Luck Oran!!

  • Rumor also has it that the Eagles will be taking ground balls in the school garden down the first base line up until their departure for Springfield to help get a better feel for Meador Park's surface.

All kidding aside, MSHSAA should be ashamed and maybe stoned that they chose Meador Park to host the final four and I feel since Oran made it the past two years, I have some room to criticize the situation. That place is beyond atrocious. 30-40% of high schools across the state have a better playing surface than there and if I could prove that, I would. You can't sit there and tell me you could not find a better place to host the final four than that dump. Missouri might just be one of the few states that does host their playoffs on a field a team at the D1 level or above plays on. Thank god MSHSAA opened up their eyes and is getting moved next year.

  • It was at Mizzou until a few years ago, however as Mizzou got better there was a possibility for them to hold NCAA regionals at their place. Obviously they aren't going to turn down an opportunity like that because of a high school tournament. Springfield was an emergency quick fix I would assume. And honestly Hammons (MSU and Springfield Cardinals) and SLU are then only two fields in the state that are on Mizzou's level outside of Busch. Mizzou was a great place to have it though.

  • Santa Fe having "1" loss sounds like they are due for a defeat or they played a weak schedule.

I'm sure they are a really good team, but how many close games against bigger schools have they played?

I looked at their schedule and I see no big powerhouses.

They are the team with the pressure, not Oran.

I agree. Missouri should set a Separate "Private School" State for all schools that have "Open School Districts/No District Boundaries.

This will allow all these schools to compete on a level playing field.

My bet is: Westminister Christian Academy, who features Andy Bene's and Mike Matheny's son, would do just fine in any Classification.

  • Dustin,

Pulled up Westminister's website and they have "Andy Benes" listed as an assistant coach.

I believe Kennett was the best overall baseball team in Southeast Missouri this season.

However, Class 3 seems to be loaded with strong Private schools that could compete in any classification.

To Win Class 3 State, Kennett would have had to defeat "3" of these private schools. Notre Dame, Lutheran South and the Mack Daddy, Westminister.

Tall order for any Public institution that only fields home grown players from it's Limited school district.

For what it's worth, I believe Kennett fielded the #1 Public Class 3 team in the State of Missouri for 2012.

-- Posted by UFO on Sat, May 26, 2012, at 9:00 AM
  • 476 schools entered district play in baseball, 52 were private. Roughly 10.9%

Of the 64 district winners, 9 were private, roughly 14%. Not that big of a jump if you ask me.

Of the 16 schools in the Final Four, 4 are private, 25%.

It is what it is. I personally would hate if the privates left MSHSAA...talk about watered down. Let's give everyone a trophy.

    -- Posted by MU_Tigers on Sat, May 26, 2012, at 9:17 AM
  • Mu-Tigers,

Thank Goodness most of these private schools play in the same District, which only advances "1" team.

If these teams were spread out in separate districts across the state, They would dominate the fields in Elite 8 and Final 4 State Competition.

    Example:

Class 3, District 4 features 5 Private schools with only "1" advancing.

Class 3, District 5 features 4 Private schools with only "1" advancing.

-- Posted by UFO on Sat, May 26, 2012, at 11:05 AM
  • Class 2 Final 16 teams only featured three Private schools. Valle Catholic, Summit Christian Academy and Bishop LeBlond.

However, Two of these teams made it to the Final Four.

Only because, Summit Christian defeated the other Private School, Bishop LeBlond in the First Round.

  • Final Thoughts,

Public Schools produce excellent athletes, however, what are the odds that a Public school produces multiple standout athletes in the same sport able to compete on the same team.

Not real good. Public Schools produce standouts every so many years in each sport. They are at the mercy of whoever happens to reside within their limited school districts. Period.

When a Public School Wins State in any team sport, it is a major Accomplishment for the team town and community.

Private schools are not at the mercy of "Defined School Districts", therefore, they routinely produce multiple standout athletes from multiple towns able to compete on the same team Every Year.

We're amazed the Private Schools do not go to State every year in every sport. Thank Goodness, they often run into each other.

With that being said. Go Oran!!!

-- Posted by UFO on Sat, May 26, 2012, at 11:49 AM
  • Tough loss to swallow for Kennett. With that said my opinion the privet does not need their own league but I would put the multiplier a little higher. Lutheran South and N.D. both have about 900+ enerolment with multiplier. That's at the upper end of class three. But still you are arguing about small difference. Fact is Kennett just didn't hit. End game great season over. Proud of my Indians.

You are exactly right mule1993. Kennett didn't hit. It's baseball. It happens. I believe those two teams play 10 times Kennett wins 8. Oh well.

-- Posted by Thats A Winner on Sun, May 27, 2012, at 10:18 PM
  • I think we should all get to recruit within a 25 mile radius and then you dont have to worry about Private schools. The thing is those Private schools sell themselves with winning. If you live in the Cape area or St. Louis area and your kid is good enough to play at a Private school would you send your kid anywhere else? No. If Missouri would adopt the State tournament system like Arkansas and TN. Then things would be different. Missouri State Tournament System is terrible. You have to win 6 or 7 games straight to win a state title. One bad day your done. Not in Ar. in TN.

    -- Posted by CoachMathis44 on Mon, May 28, 2012, at 9:40 AM
  • CoachMathis44,

Does Arkansas and Tennessee play the best 2 out of 3 advances each time?

If so, I like it. I agree. One game elimination doesn't always advance the best team.

-- Posted by UFO on Mon, May 28, 2012, at 4:26 PM
  • I believe Public School kids can attend other Public Schools, but they have to pay the "Out of District Tuition".

That's the Rub. Many or most public school kids can not afford to pay additional fees.

This results in the Matheny's and Bennes's of the world loading up teams because: "They Can".

-- Posted by UFO on Mon, May 28, 2012, at 4:43 PM
  • Coach Mathis, I hate to disagree but open enrollment could lead to a nightmare scenario for schools. There are people fighting for that and a voucher system. Both would be headaches for public schools. Take a town like Naylor for example, they produce a couple good athletes and their getting ready to go into high school and they jump ship to go play for poplar bluff. Your idea of a playoff system for district championship, sectional, etc isn't crazy but we all know that the best team does not always win the state championship. Even in double elimination tourneys I have seen the lesser team win. It is what it is. That's what I say to my athletes about the regional high school and to myself on the state tournament.

    -- Posted by deckerd31 on Mon, May 28, 2012, at 9:26 PM
  • I really like the idea of "Open Enrollment". It would eliminate any reason for a Private school multiplier.

It would create some very, very good teams and some really bad teams through out the state.

However, I suspect some of the smaller schools would end up dropping several of their sports because of an inability to compete and lack of participation.

In addition, some of the Public schools with poor academic standards would be pressured to improve or close.

Do we really need 3 or 4 small schools located within 15 miles of each other anyway?
