Rachel Crader is the editor of semoball.com. She graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in May of 2009 before spending the summer covering the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Highlights from Rachel's days in college include having a class down the hall from Chase Daniel and having NCAA wrestling champion Ben Askren hold the door open for her at Brady Commons, Mizzou's student center. She spent time covering Mizzou basketball, softball and baseball while working for the Columbia Missourian and is excited to return home to Southeast Missouri to cover local sports for semoball.com.

Notre Dame soccer ties for third place (Update on final goal included)

Alright, after one minor technology emergency, we're live from Fenton with the Class 2 soccer third place game between Notre Dame and Helias.

There are 32 minutes left in the first half of play. Neither team has scored, though Helias game close two minutes into the game. ND keeper James Holloway needed a kick-save to keep Helias out of the net.

First Half

25:20 -- Notre Dame just got its first corner of the match, but it was deflected out of bounds on a header. Still 0-0.

22:37 -- Another corner for ND, but no real threat created. It's hard to say who's winning the overall battle right now. Helias still has the only real shoring opportunity created at this point

16:16 -- GOAL ND! A mess in the box turned into a goal for the Bulldogs as the ball got behind the Helias keeper and casually bounced into the goal. Jonathan Lynch was announced as the scored for ND, but it looked like Jacob Pewitt to the ND stat keepers I'm sitting beside. We'll officially sort that out later, but the important thing to not is that Notre Dame now has a 1-0 lead.

9:24 -- Helias just hit the crossbar after its second corner in a few minutes time. Holloway made a couple more big saves as well to keep ND ahead 1-0.

2:51 -- There is no doubt that Helias is getting more scoring opportunities than Notre Dame at this point, but the Bulldogs have yet to allow a goal and lead 1-0.

Halftime -- Notre Dame still leads 1-0 right now, but it nearly lost its lead in the final seconds of the first half but Helias' Michael Schulte hit the left goal post with a shot.

Second Half

We are underway in the second half with ND leading 1-0.

39:08 -- GOAL HELIAS! Schulte just got revenge for that goal post, scoring a goal very early on here in the second half. The teams are now tied 1-1.

28:24 -- Still a 1-1 tie. Notre Dame's Joe Froemsdorf produced a solid shot but it was wide left. Helias is pounding at the door pretty steadily right now, but haven't netted another goal to this point.

23:14 -- Notre Dame's Ethan Huber received a yellow card and had to leave the game. Not much complaining from the Bulldog bench.

15:57 -- Holloway made another nice stop on a ball struck outside the box. Not his most impressive of the day, but he's racking up a lot of saves.

11:27 -- GOAL HELIAS. Helias just scored on a penalty kick. (No time for details now. Later, I promise.)

9:54 -- Free kick for ND just outside their box. A lot of arguing is going on after the first attempt and the players just exchanged a few extra curricular pushes while the referee tries to sort out a second free kick.

1:34 -- GOAL ND!!! Jacob Pewitt just scored on an absolutely amazing header from outside the box. I'm going to have to ask him how he did it becasue I have no idea. It looked like his body torqued in midair. Wow. We're tied 2-2.

Edit: I really did not see this play well. I was staring right at it, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't see how he redirected the ball. The evidence: Pewitt told me he hit the ball with his shin, not his head. I was really that confounded. Where is super-so-mo-replay when you need it?

The "We are ND" chant is at its loudest.

The game has just ended and we're not going to play any overtime. Apparently the teams will share third place. This is not a very popular rule with the ND student section.

The game is over. Everyone seems a little stunned.

"Like it's that much of a hassle," says one ND student. I tend to agree.

Thanks for the updated blogs -- ND is having such a great Fall for sports -- Softball STATE Champions, the 1st ever in softball & only the 2nd Girls State Championship ever for the ND Girls Sports Prgrms -- Boys Cross Country -3rd place in State, Volleyball - 4th place in State & now another State. Trophy - for 3rd or 4th place for the boys who won State Titles in 2006, 2007, & finished 3rd in 2008.

Live blogging for soccer requires a great imagination considering nobody scores. Great to see it up on the website for soccer fans. I've always tried to like soccer. I just cannot get into soccer. It is my understanding Notre Dame has one of the top programs in the state in soccer every year. Looks like they have a chance in this game. Good luck Notre Dame.

I'm ready for the Sikeston/Helias football game.

What happens if the game is tied 1-1 after regulation? How many overtimes do they play in high school before they go to penalty kicks? My favorite part of soccer is penalty kicks. I hope we get to penalty kicks in this game!!!

My second part of soccer is when they give out yellow cards. Sounds like the score of this game might be close until the end.

They don't play overtime to determine who finishes third in the state. Wow. Would somebody go interview the chairman of the committee that made this decision. What's the justification behind the decision?

What a year for ND & it was nice to see both teams awarded 3rd place finishes -- Of course, OT would have been a better way to end it & if still tied after 2 overtimes then "both" teams should be awarded 3rd place - but - it is what it is, and the fact that both teams made it that far & played that well is a fitting end.

Regarding the comment, "...Notre Dame has one of the top programs in the state in soccer every year" lets not get this confused, this is Class 2 we're talking about. As story goes, if ND were in the same class as Jackson and Cape Central they frankly wouldn't make it out of sectionals which is common knowledge. For the people who know high school soccer in Missouri know there's quite a difference in the quality of play between Bolivar, Halias, and St. Mary's in Class 2 vs. SLU, Vianney, CBC, DeSmet, and Chaminade in Class 3. The later bunch are consistently ranked in the nation and are respected beyond the state of Missouri.

ND should certainly be congratulated for their accomplishments, but one should not misunderstand the facts.

Yes it is true that SLU, Vianney, CBC, DeSmet, and Chaminade are all very good teams, but it would be kind of difficult for a school with just a little over 500 kids to compete with the 2500 or so that CBC and SLU have. If you have more kids in a school, then the chances are pretty good that you will have more athletes to choose from.

In my opinion, it would be unfair to compare Notre Dame's program to SLU, DeSmet and Chaminade. I agree with Pepper and Sam. It would be kind of difficult for a school with just a little over 500 kids to compete with the 2500 or so that CBC and SLU have.

I wish MSHSAA would allow all schools to recruit. It would be great for the Journalism profession. It would give sports writers something to write about in the offseason. LOL! What do you think Crader? Does it sound like a good idea? LOL come on Crader please respond to this comment.

I'm disinclined to engage in the high school recruiting discussion. The only reality is and the only thing that matters is private schools aren't going anywhere. I'm much more interested in making sure that the playing field in this reality is as fair as possible. I don't think it's necessary to rehash the recruiting thing (which isn't what you're doing here, I understand) every time ND comes up.

LOL Crader doesn't like to talk about recruiting. Fair enough!

I'm ready for the basketball preview. I hope it is ready by Friday morning so I can print it out and take it with me to New Madrid and read it at halftime of every game. Reading basketball previews during halftime is a great way to improve your prediction percentage!!!

Who holds the tournament scoring record? I know Stroup from Chaffee had the record but I think it has been broken twice since then. Anybody know?
