After a slower slate the day before, Friday action in the area ramped up for a packed day of local high school baseball and softball action.

For Scott City diamond sports, it was a day to remember as baseball (17-1) and softball (9-4) went 4-0 in the opening day of their respective Malden Tournaments.

BB: Scott City 12, Caruthersville 1

Scott City baseball began its run in Malden with eight runs in the first inning to blow by Caruthersville.

Jackson Gloth finished with a game-high two hits, both singles, while Kobe Watson added a single to wrap up Scott City's hitting performance.

The Rams drew 11 walks and added two hit-by-pitches for good measure, led in walks by Lane Holder's three while Watson added two.

Brayden Mashek grabbed the win on the mound for Scott City, allowing two hits and two walks with just one run surrendered in his three innings on the mound.

Lane Miller relieved him there, throwing another two scoreless innings en route to a dominant victory against a tough Tigers team in the opener.

Ryan Guest got Caruthersville's only two hits of the day at the plate, which included a triple as he rounded out his day with all four of Caruthersville's total bases.

SB: Scott City 11, Caruthersville 4

Scott City softball began its day with a lopsided win against Caruthersville, going down a pair early but quickly hounding the Tigers' pitching.

Gracie Karrenbrock batted a ridiculous 4-for-4 in the opener, including a double and a triple, while Mackenzie Lawless' 3-for-4 day included a double, triple and a homer – perhaps even more impressive.

Alyssa Dirden, a tenured Rams started, came in relief in the third and controlled the pace from there, holding the Tigers to one run on five hits and a walk, striking out 11.

SB: Woodland 6, Greenville 3

A consistent offensive effort for the Lady Cardinals saw Woodland march past Greenville in its opener in Malden, winning 6-3.

The Cardinals scored in five of the seven innings played, with Mallary Barks' three hits commanding their day at the plate.

Janelle Fox's inside-the-park homer in the sixth put the bow on an excellent game for Woodland, her second hit of the day.

Makayla Altenthal grabbed the win for the Cardinals, pitching the first six innings while earning two runs on seven hits and three walks.

Presley Walk and Taylor Wood both grabbed two hits for the Bears, but they couldn't push them into the win as Woodland's Rhodie Long iced the game out with the save.

BB: St. Vincent 13, Crystal City 0

St. Vincent baseball (3-8) hounded Crystal City in its opening game in the Oak Ridge Invitational, scoring eight runs in the second en route to a huge win.

Indians pitcher Jacob Seabaugh tossed a five-inning no-hitter against the Hornets, striking out 12 as he was just two hit-by-pitches away from a perfect game.

Simon Barber led the Indian offense with a three-hit day at the dish, including a pair of doubles while Christian Schaaf's two hits went for a game-high four RBIs as St. Vincent ran away.

BB: Oak Ridge 11, Leopold 8

Oak Ridge (3-6) squeaked past Leopold (3-5) in the opener at the Oak Ridge Invitational on Friday, winning 11-8 after a high-flying start.

The Bluejays scored nine runs across the first three innings and tacked on another two for good measure in the fourth, with the game ending in five frames.

Konnor Hobeck finished as the only Bluejay with multiple hits, which included a double as he finished with three RBIs.

Hobeck also earned the save as he came on in the fifth inning and shut the door on Leopold as the Wildcats tried to rally back into the matchup.

Garrett Brown and Riley Engelen both reached multi-hit territory for the Wildcats and, coincidentally, both finished with the only extra-base hits of the day for Leopold with a double each.

SB: Oak Ridge 18, Scott County Central 3

Oak Ridge (4-4) got back to even on the season with a huge victory against Scott County Central in the Oak Ridge Invitational.

Scoring 13 runs in the first inning alone, the Bluejays cruised to the win with a hard-nosed offensive performance against the Braves.

LeeAnna Davis finished a team-high 3-for-3 at the plate, which included a double as she finished the game with four RBIs while also drawing a walk, scoring four times.

Kinsley Bogenpohl, MaKayla Rangel and Sarah McLane joined her with two hits each as the Bluejays stormed past the Braves in the tournament opener.

Bogenpohl threw all four innings for the Jays, allowing a hit and three walks but only earning one run as she struck out 11 batters.

SB: Scott City 12, New Madrid 1

Scott City softball doubled down on its opening win in the Malden Tournament with a walk-off winner over New Madrid.

Mackenzie Lawless led the Rams on both ends, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI while also grabbing the win on the mound.

Lawless wrapped up the opening day in Malden with a six-inning, one-run performance, surrendering four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Alyssa Dirden joined her with three hits while Jersey Black and Harley Glueck both added a pair each, with Black chipping in a triple for the longest run of the game on the basepaths.

BB: Scott City 12, Neelyville 0

Scott City baseball concluded its day with a dominant 12-run victory over Neelyville, scoring all 12 in the first two innings and finishing off the Tigers in four innings.

Mark Panagos, Lane Miller, Jackson Gloth and Gavin Venable each grabbed two hits in the win, with Venable, Gloth and Panagos all hitting for doubles.

Gloth got the winning nod from the Scott City statistician, going 2.0 in the second and third with a hit and a walk while keeping Neelyville scoreless.

BB: Saxony 7, Chaffee 6

Saxony Lutheran (8-3) came back from the brink of defeat to stun Chaffee (14-2) at home on Friday night, scoring three in the seventh to come back and walk it off.

With the game-ending double play in order for Chaffee, James Hope sent the first pitch through the left side to score two runs to go from down a run to the victory.

Reid Bengtson's three hits led the Crusaders there on Friday, but Hope's two-RBI single saw him finish with a game-high mark in runs batted in.

Korby Engert came in late for Saxony and, despite seeing a run cross on his two hits allowed, held Chaffee off enough to allow the Crusaders one last rally.

Chaffee's Eli Glueck and Leyton Hanback both hit twice, with Glueck sending one for a triple, but six runs weren't enough for the Devils on Friday night.

BB: Fredericktown 6, Kelly 0

Kelly (7-6) opened its wood bat tourney with a 6-0 loss to a talented Fredericktown squad on Friday, led by two big innings.

Fredericktown broke the deadlock with a two-run third, and doubled down in the fifth when the Blackcats scored four to put the game away.

Kelly's offense struggled mightily, drawing six walks but hitting just twice – once from Kaleb Yount, another from Reece Eftink.

BB: Poplar Bluff 10, Cape Central 1

Poplar Bluff got the best of Cape Central (4-15) down the stretch on Friday night, scoring six in the fifth to secure a 10-1 victory at home.

After a scoreless first two innings, Poplar Bluff got the opening tally in the bottom of the third and rode that wave to the lopsided conference win.

Kolby Greenwall's four-hit day led Poplar Bluff to the victory, tripling and finishing with six bases as his loud bat sparked the Mule offense.

Noah Spain's 6.0 innings saw him surrender no runs on his four hits and a hit-by-pitch, striking out six to earn the victory.

Brayden Meade had Cape Central's lone RBI, being one of four Tigers to notch a hit but never generating a real offensive rhythm.

BB: Dexter 2, Advance 1

After a long deadlock spell, Dexter grabbed the lead in the fifth and finished the job to put away Advance (2-9) in a 2-1 final at Dexter.

Against a tough SEMO Conference foe, Advance grabbed the opening score in the first, but Dexter quickly equalized before going ahead for good in the fifth.

Justus Lovelady of Dexter was pulled after a strong 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and two walks before giving way to David Pedigo.

Pedigo dominated the Hornets, earning the win after a 2.2-inning run that saw not a single Advance baserunner.

Houston Neely of Dexter had the game's only multi-hit performance, singling twice including driving in the game's winning run.

Kadon Rodgers pitched six innings of three-hit, one-walk ball and surrendered just one earned run, but his efforts weren't enough as Dexter pulled away late.

SB: Advance 20, Leopold 3

It was the Kaylee Cline show for Advance (11-2) on Friday as the Hornets blitzed Leopold (2-5) for a 20-piece on the road.

Cline finished her day 5-for-5 at the plate with a single, a double, a triple and two homers, not just one, for seven total RBIs.

Addison Carlton drove in two runs on four hits, Natalee Roper hit three times for three RBIs while four other Hornets finished their days with two hits.

The production went all the way down the line for Advance on Friday, truly a testament to their deep roster of talent.

Carlton allowed one hit and four walks in the circle, earning none of the three runs that crossed while striking out eight batters for another big win.

Ava Jansen got the lone hit of the game for the Wildcats while four individuals drew walks from Carlton.

BB: Gateway Legacy 10, Notre Dame 7

If not for a seven-run frame in the fourth from Gateway Legacy, Notre Dame (9-6) may have been able to come away with the win in a 10-7 Friday loss.

Reid Morgan's three hits, driving in two runs, along with two-hit days from TJ Bolen, Carson Essner and Jack Evans had the Dawgs within striking distance.

If you eliminate that breakout fourth for Gateway, the visitors scored just three runs in two innings on Friday, but that's not what happened.

Notre Dame pushed late, led by a perfect two innings from Chase Lawson to close the game, but the Bulldogs couldn't close that huge gap that Gateway had created.

BB: Meadow Heights 11, Delta 0

Meadow Heights (8-4) opened its Oak Ridge Invitational with a rowdy win against Delta (1-13), scoring four in the first and six in the third to take a shortened victory.

The Panthers drew 10 walks, outweighing just seven hits, led by Ransom Grindstaff and Riley Smith who each drew a walk to go with two hits.

Grindstaff went for four RBIs in the Friday win, scoring twice himself including a two-run homer in the first to have a direct involvement in six Meadow Heights scores as the Panthers ran away.

Elijah Frazier pitched all four innings for the Panthers, being hit three times but never allowing the Bobcats to score as he struck out six.

Paxton Hornbuckle had a day for the Bobcats, hitting twice for singles while freshman Silas Amelung also singled, but neither came around to score.

BB: Jefferson 3, Woodland 2

It looked as though this one would be a thriller after both teams scored two in the first, but it took nine innings for Jefferson to take a 3-2 win against Woodland (3-6) on Friday.

The neighbors from the north opened their Oak Ridge Invite run with a tight one against a feisty Woodland team, but the Cardinals didn't just lay down.

Taking a two-run lead in the first, Seth ABernathy led Woodland's offense with a single and a double, scoring one of the Cardinals' runs in the first.

Kale Landewee went the distance, pitching the final 5.2 innings while surrendering just four hits and a walk, never earning a run in the loss.

Landewee also got the only other hit of the day for Woodland, but a Cardinals error allowed the winning run to later score on a sacrifice fly, giving him the loss.

BB: Kelly 11, St. Pius X 1

Kelly (7-6) rounded out the first day of its wood bat run with a dominant victory over St. Pius X, leaving behind an early offensive struggle for a loud offensive performance.

The Hawks scored nine run between the fourth and fifth innings, leaving behind three scoreless innings early to pounce on the Lancers.

Nicholas Christian's three hits, two for doubles, led the Hawks offensively while Reece Eftink blasted a solo homer to follow him closely in production.

Brandon Herrion finished his day on the mound with 6.0 innings thrown, including three hits, three walks and none earned on six strikeouts.

BB: Graves County 1, Jackson 0

That's wooden bats for you. Led by a phenomenal effort by Carson McDaniel, Jackson (12-4) couldn't muster up but one hit in its 1-0 loss against Graves County in a walk-off.

McDaniel threw six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 11 Eagle batters.

Owen Osborne got the only hit of the day, a single. He also drew a walk, one of six that the Indians drew to get some rhythm but never enough to come around.

SB: Portageville 13, Woodland 3

Woodland (6-4) rounded out opening day in the Malden Tournament with a tough loss to Portageville, with the Bulldogs controlling all the momentum.

Reece Rone finished as the only Bulldog with multiple hits, singling and doubling while also drawing one of Portageville's eight walks.

Aubrey Greenwell and Ja'Niya Smith each hit for a double on Friday, their extra-base hits helping to keep the Bulldog dugout hot.

Greenwell held strong on the mound, allowing seven hits but no walks as she earned just two runs in 5.0 innings of work.

Mallary Barks was a sparkplug for the Cardinals, hitting three times, once for a double, but Allyssa Davis may have been the most productive Cardinal with two doubles for two RBIs.
