Missourian Diamond Roundup, Mar. 23: Oran streaky in salty Saturday split

Some highs and some lows came out across the Southeast Missourian newspaper coverage area as Saturday baseball action unfolded through the morning and early afternoon.

Oran baseball (2-2) split a pair on Saturday, taking a dominant win over St. Pius X after drawing 12 total walks but also taking a mercy-rule defeat to Valle Catholic.

It's been that kind of season for Oran, but Parker Bryant put on a strong performance in the win against the Lancers with a two-hit, two-walk day.

In the second of two games, the Eagles mustered up just two hits in a brutal loss to Valle Catholic, trailing early and never recovering.

After a .500 start to the year, they'll look to smooth out those early offensive woes and prove why they're ranked so highly among Class 1 teams.

Cape Central baseball (1-6) continued its season-opening slump with a rough loss against Festus and another later loss against Fort Zumwalt East.

Despite the loss, the Tigers finally got some offensive rhythm with a six-run performance against East in the second game of the doubleheader.

Alas, they still couldn't crack the code defensively as they let up yet another 10-plus-run game defensively, their fourth of the year.

Scott City baseball (5-1) rebounded from its first loss of the year yesterday with a dominant victory against Sikeston on Saturday.

That win included a two-run bomb from Jackson Gloth and a two-hit performance from Brayden Mashek on the mound to boot.

The Rams have dominated local competition, and taking an eight-run victory against a Class 5 school bodes well on any résumé, particularly that of a Class 3 club.

Notre Dame (4-2) righted the ship after a mercy-rule loss yesterday with a four-run win over South Callaway on Saturday.

Battling out of an early hole, the Bulldogs controlled the middle innings and pushed that momentum to the finish line for an important win in the Borgia/Union Tournament up north.

Here's your box score wrap for Saturday action around the area.
