Portageville rebounds from first loss with blowout win over Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. — Portageville responded from its first loss of the season with a lop-sided win at Bloomfield on Monday, April 3.

The Bulldogs (11-1) used a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching to win 12-0 over the Wildcats (2-3).

“It was nice to come back from a loss with a strong performance and take care of business,” said Portageville coach Tyler Trover. “We had some quality at-bats and a couple of home runs that energized the team. We’re just going to continue to try to get better every day.”

Aaron Dunlap and Carson Bradley each had two hits, while Mason Adams, Trey Benthal, Thomas Frakes, Beau Hunter-Warren, Conner Johnson and Xayvion Bogan each had one hit. Dunlap and Warren each had a double, while Adams and Benthal each added home runs.

Bradley earned the win after throwing four innings and not allowing any runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walked batters. Adams threw the final inning, striking out two and allowing one hit.

It was a solid display for the team after its 10-game winning streak was snapped by Valle Catholic (9-1) in Ste. Genevieve on Saturday, April 1.

The Warriors defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 8-3.

Portageville gained an early lead when Hunter-Warren scored on a single by Owen Roberts in the top of the second inning, but Valle Catholic responded with a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Bulldogs tied it 2-2 in the ensuing inning when Benthal singled on a line drive to score Huston Partin, but again, the Warriors had an answer and scored five runs in the bottom of the inning.

“It was our first litmus test and unfortunately we didn’t pass it,” Trover said. “But we like our team and where we can be by the end of the year. If we play well hopefully we’ll get a shot at them in the postseason.”

Frakes and Benthal led the team’s offense with two hits each.

Hunter-Warren took the loss after one inning and allowed five earned runs on four hits with three walked batters.

Frakes started the game and threw the first four innings, allowing zero earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Rylan Partin pitched the final inning and didn’t allow any earned runs on one hit.

Portageville hosts Cape Central (3-6) on Tuesday, April 4, and Charleston (3-2) on Thursday, April 6.
