Ellington takes down Greenville for second win on young season

The Ellington baseball team won its second game in three days beating Greenville on Monday 11-5 at Ellington High School.

The Whippets scored four times in the home half of the opening inning as well as once in the third inning, three times in the fifth frame and three more times in the sixth.

Senior John Heady went 2-for-4 in the game and drove home 4 RBIs and junior Aiden Anderson went 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Jake Farmer drove in a run and scored four times with one of the hits being a solo home run.

On the mound, Anderson collected the win pitching three innings, allowing two runs on two hits. The starting pitcher walked six batters and struck out two.

Tucker DeMent pitched four innings in relief, giving up three runs on five hits. The senior struck out six and walked five.

For Greenville, sophomore’s William Friley and Talan McDaniel each recorded multi-hit games but the Bears were unable to come up with clutch hits as Greenville stranded many of the 11 walks drawn.

Trey Porter was on the losing end of the pitching matchup, throwing 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits, striking out four and issuing two walks. Porter gave up the solo shot to Farmer in the third inning.

Ellington split two games at the Van Buren Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend, winning its first game against Mammouth Spring, 14-2, but lost to Woodland 9-1.

Ellington (2-1) will host Salem at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Ellington High School.

Greenville (0-1) will play Woodland at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at home.
