It will be no ordinary Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Country Club this weekend.

A century ago, on April 3, 1921, Fred A. Groves and Charles W. Boutin hit the links at the local course and played the first official rounds.

Groves bested Boutin with a nine-hole score of 68 over his competitor’s round of 73.

“It is very rare that any organization celebrates 100 years of operation,” CGCC President Mark Rhodes said in a release. “Let alone, a community-based association with its purpose of creating a unique golf experience and ‘family-first atmosphere.”

It was an auspicious debut for the club, which has evolved into a festive facility for members of all ages.

Today, the club features 18 holes stretched over rolling hills, which provide challenges for even the most seasoned golfer, as well as pickleball courts, a swimming pool, multiple dining options, flexible event space, and enjoyable social activities.

“That is why we decided to stage a ceremony to commemorate this major event in Cape Girardeau history,” Rhodes continued.

The Club kicked off a centennial gala last month, in which over 100 members and guests attended a black-tie dinner and dance.

There will be more celebrations lasting through the summer and into the autumn.
