Live Blog: Cape Legion eliminates Sikeston in District 14 tourney

The elimination game between Cape Post 63 and Sikeston is underway at the American Legion baseball District 14 tournament, almost an hour later than originally scheduled.

I'll provide updates below after every half-inning.

Here is an updated schedule for the rest of the tournament:

Sunday

Game 7: Cape vs. Sikeston 2:30 p.m.

Game 8: Dunklin County vs. WG7 5:30 p.m.

Monday (If necessary)

Game 9: WG8 vs. Dunklin County 7 p.m.

Ben Freed is on the mound for Sikeston.

Jake Pewitt singled. Pewitt stole second. Blake Smith singled, bringing Pewitt home. Smith stole second. Ryan Grigaitis flied out to left. Dustin Crowden struck out. Skylar Cobb reached on an error, allowing Smith to score. Cobb advanced to second when shortstop throw went into dugout. Jimmy Obermark grounded out to second.

Tanner Hiett is on the mound for Cape.

Bryan Freed struck out. Ross Bohannon grounded out to shortstop. Josh Boese hit a ball hard to third base that Dustin Crowden couldn't reel in. I scored it a hit. I assume some would think it was an error. It was just one of those plays. Ben Freed grounded out to Crowden at third.

Trent St. Cin singled. St. Cin stole second. Andrew Williams popped out to the first baseman. Jamie Pickel flied out to left. Jake Pewitt grounded out to first base.

Nathan Rodgers walked. Evan Underwood singled. Cord Sheehy got an infield single. Steven Beydler struck out. Josh Hampton struck out. Bryan Freed hit a soft liner to second base.

Hiett escapes a bases-loaded jam.

Blake Smith flied out to centerfield. Ryan Grigaitis popped up to shortstop. Dustin Crowden doubled. Skylar Cobb got an infield single. Jimmy Obermark flied at to left.

Hiett sat the Sikeston side down quickly, retiring Ross Bohannon and Josh Boese on infield grounders before getting Ben Freed to fly out to left.

Freed gets a quick inning of his own. Trent St. Cin grounded out to third. Andrew William flied out to centerfield. Jaime Pickel grounded out to first.

Bottom of Fourth

Nathan Rodgers walked. Evan Underwood singled. Cord Sheehy singled to load the bases. (Those same three players loaded the bases in the second inning.) Steven Beydler hit a grounder to second baseman Blake Smith. Smith got the force out at second, but shortstop Jimmy Obermark couldn't complete the double play. Rodgers scored. Josh Hampton struck out. A wild pitch allowed Underwood to score. Bryan Freed grounded out to the pitcher.

Jake Pewitt flied out to center. Blake Smith reached on a bunt single. Ryan Grigaitis doubled, scoring Smith from first. (It was a great baserunning play by Smith, who read the ball well and early.) Dustin Crowden singled. Skylar Cobb hit a grounder to second base. Bryan Freed made a good play to get a force out at second, but Grigaitis scored. Cobb stole second. JImmy Obermark popped up to the pitcher.

Ross Bohannon popped up to third. Josh Boese fouled out. Ben Freed singled. Nathan Rodgers flied out to left.

Trent St. Cin grounded out to third. Andrew Williams doubled. Jamie Pickel grounded out to second base. Jake Pewitt doubled to center, scoring Williams. Blake Smith was hit by a pitch. Ryan Grigaitis homered over the left field fence, bring home three runs. Dustin Crowden doubled. Skylar Cobb lined out to shortstop.

Evan Underwood doubled. Cord Sheehy singled. Steven Beydler doubled, scoring Underwood and Sheehy. Josh Hampton popped up to shortstop. Bryan Freed grounded out to third. Ross Bohannon grounded out to shortstop.

Top of Seventh

JImmy Obermark singled. Trent St. Cin flied out to center. Andrew Williams singled, scoring Obermark. Williams stole second. Jamie Pickel grounded out to second. Jake Pewitt walked.

Paul Fox replaced Ben Freed on the mound.

I'll confess I was looking down at my scorecard, but I believe Fox tried to pick Pewitt off first and threw the ball away. The result was Pewitt racing all the way around the bases to score. Williams also scored. Blake Smith doubled. Ryan Grigaitis hit an RBI double. Grigaitis has three hit and five RBI in the game. Dustin Crowden flied out to right field.

Josh Boese flied at to right. Ben Freed singled. Nathan Rodgers doubled. Evan Underwood struck out. Cord Sheehy grounded out to third.

Logan Morris pinch-hit for Skylar Cobb (who I presume will pitch against Dunklin County later today should Cape win). Morris struck out. Jimmy Obermark hit a solo home run. Trent St. Cin reached on an error. Andrew Williams singled. Josh Hiett hit for Jamie Pickel and singled, scoring St. Cin. Jake Pewitt grounded out to first. Williams scored. Jeremy Essner hit for Blake Smith and grounded out to first.

Sikeston will need to score in the bottom of the inning to avoid a run-rule loss.

Bottom of Eighth

Steven Beydler walked. Josh Hampton struck out. Nathan Holland pinch-hit for Bryan Freed and struck out. Ross Bohannon singled, scoring Beydler. Trey Johnson pinch-hit for Josh Boese and popped up to end the game.
