Fast start powers Jackson past Mules

JACKSON, Mo. — The Jackson Indians held the Poplar Bluff Mules scoreless from the field in the opening period to build up a big early lead on the way to a 67-47 win Tuesday night in SEMO Conference action.

Jackson led 14-1 after the opening period, but the Mules (6-8) cut it to 28-20 by halftime. However, Poplar Bluff could get no closer the rest of the way and Jackson outscored the Mules 39-27 after halftime.

It was the fourth loss in a row for Mules, who head to Dyersburg, Tenn. on Friday.

Terrance Williams led the Mules with 13 points, while Darius Graham added 10.

Kennett 69, Twin Rivers 68

Kennett Indians take the win from Twin Rivers in a close battle. The two teams traded leads throughout the game, but Kennett came out on top, thanks to a 4-point barrage.

Kennett hit eight triples, while Twin Rivers came out with only two.

Colton Hargraves (19 points) and Jagger Crismon (12) were Twin Rivers’ top scorers.

“The kids played hard. I appreciate their effort, we just had some lapses here and there. We had a few bad breaks, all stuff we need to work on,” said Twin Rivers head coach Seth McBroom.

Malden 62, Hayti 29

At Malden, the hos Green Wave held nothing back against Hayti Indians in a Bootheel Conference game.

“One thing about the Bootheel Conference basketball is that no teams are safe night in or night out,” said Malden head coach Mike Kilgore. “Hayti’s programs are always full of athletes and they got after us on the defensive end. The game could have easily been a high 40s to mid 60s type of game. I don’t frown upon any teams because our entire league gets better and better as we approach the conference tournament.

“We have to make sure we stay solid with our principles and fundamentals because some games may not be decided by a large margin. They could very well be decided by a single play. We just have to be ready to play at all times.”

Quamareous Farmer (17 points) and Payton Woodard (12) helped Malden with their win against Hayti.

Naylor 72, Southland 68

At Naylor the host Eagles scraped out a win against Southland Rebels.

Brock Woolard and Damian Thilman doubled-up during the game, both leading Naylor with 20 points apiece.

“The whole team played great defense during the second half to come behind and win the game,” said Naylor head coach Ed Moore.

Clarkton 84, North Pemiscot 17

The Clarkton Bulldogs defeated North Pemiscot in at blowout.

North Pemiscot had a hard time atatcking the basket, with zero points in the second quarter.

Owen Morgan and Amauri Gorman both scored 25 points apiece led Clarkton to the victory.

“We were able to get everyone in the game and play solid defensively,” said Clarkton head coach Cole McBroom.

Black River League Tournament

Ellington 88, Clearwater 63

At Ellington, the host Whippets defeated the Clearwater Tiger in the first round of the tournament.

Ellington was led by Brock Morey, who had 28 points. He was followed by Conor Miller with 23 points.

“We had a great second half offensively and defensively by our team and really liked having five scorers in double figures,” said Ellington head coach Jeremy Peterson. “Now we can prepare to go against South Iron, a team that kicked our tail the first week of December.”

Setting the pace for Clearwater were Keegan Gracey (23 points) and Charles Robbins (19).

“We hung with them until the fourth quarter,” said Clearwater head coach Zac Moore. “They did a great job of knocking down shots and making their free-throws. We will re-watch the game and prepare to take them on again on senior night, Jan. 31.

Ellington will advance to play South Iron in the BRL semifinals Thursday.

East Carter 91, Lesterville 59

At Ellington, the East Carter Redbirds put on a great performance against the Lesterville Bearcats in the first round of the Black River League tournament.

Kasen McCarty led his team to victory with 22 points.

“We got out in transition early with some steals and stops. We really jumped on them in the first quarter,” said East Carter head coach Jordan Penn. “I felt like our defense wasn’t very good early on, but we turned it up and did enough to pull away.”

East Carter will advance Thursday to play Bunker in the BRL semifinals.

GIRLS

Malden 50, Twin Rivers 35

The Malden Lady Wave defeated Twin Rivers Lady Royals 50-35. It was a lower scoring game for Twin Rivers and Malden used that to their advantage.

Jada Townsend led Malden with 13 points, followed by Brydon Maddox with 11.

“The girls are starting to put things together as a team. They played hard tonight and kept the energy going throughout the entire game,” said Malden girls head coach Alexis Roberson.

Haylyn Crockett was Twin Rivers’ leading scorer with eight points, just above Alexis Yeley with seven.

“Malden showed up ready to play and we did not,” said Twin Rivers head coach David Crockett.
