Area teams set to compete at holiday tournaments
Local sports fans know that with the holiday season, also comes high school basketball tournaments.
Here is where all the area schools (Standard-Democrat coverage area) will be competing next week.
The Sikeston boys travel to the 29th annual St. Dominic - Chick-Fil-A Christmas Basketball Tournament, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 27 at the Fallon Family Center in O’Fallon, Missouri.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs (5-2) will face fifth-seeded Lutheran St. Charles (3-1) at 7 p.m.
Sikeston has played in the tournament every season since 2010, capturing championships on eight different occasions with its last coming in 2018.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-6) will also compete in the tournament. The team was seeded sixth and will face third-seeded St. Dominic (4-2) at 4 p.m.
The girls’ team started participating in the tournament in 2013 and won the crown in 2015.
The boys’ squads from Charleston, Kelly, Oran and Scott County Central will compete in the 78th annual Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, beginning Monday, Dec. 26
The second-seeded Bluejays (5-4) will face 15th-seeded Leopold (2-0) at 10:30 a.m.
Charleston looks to defend its title after winning the tournament last season. The Bluejays are also seeking to win the tournament title for the 20th time in school history.
Oran (6-1) was seeded sixth and takes on 11th-seeded Chaffee (4-3) at 6 p.m.
The Eagles won tournament titles in 1966, 1965 and 1964
Ninth-seeded Kelly (4-4) will face eighth-seeded Oak Ridge (7-1) at 9 p.m.
The Hawks’ lone championship came in 1973.
Scott County Central (1-6) is seeded 13th and will take on fourth-seed Advance (6-0) at 1:30 p.m.
The Braves have won the tournament seven times with their last title coming in 2010, bookending a three-peat.
The boys’ teams from East Prairie and Portageville will compete in the 66th Bloomfield Christmas Tournament, beginning Monday, Dec. 26.
The ninth-seeded Eagles (4-3) will face eighth-seeded Puxico (6-2) at 11:15 a.m. and the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (4-3) will face 13th-seeded South Pemiscot (2-3) at 12:45 p.m.
Portageville has won the tournament three times, including last season when they defeated top-seeded Bernie 51-49 in the championship.
East Prairie has never won the tournament but played for the title in 1985.
