The Cape Central Tigers have high expectations for the upcoming season and senior Cam Williams will play a big part in any success the Tigers have in 2022-23.

Williams was named to the All-SEMO Conference first team and was also a Class 5 All-State selection a season ago. While he already impressed many as a junior, both Williams and Tigers coach Drew Church think he’s improved even more.

“He has taken a big jump this summer,” Church said. “I feel like his motor has really improved this summer. He’s playing harder, he’s going at a better pace and he had a really good summer in terms of production.”

Williams said he spends the majority of the off-season in the gym or on a court working on his game.

“I go to the gym every morning at 5 and then I train after school,” Williams said. “During the summer I play for an AAU team against a lot of high-level talent that sharpens my game up.”

Being on the court means a lot to Williams, and he credits his father, Charles, for getting him into basketball.

“My father was a big-time basketball player back then,” Williams said. “I just wanted to follow in his footsteps.”

Williams has seen his game grow considerably throughout his high school career, but feels he’s improved the most on offense.

“I feel like my shot-creating ability and my ability to handle the ball and dribble up the court when the guards need help (has improved the most),” Williams said.

While his first three years have been successful, Williams feels he has more to prove as a senior.

“It motivates me a lot,” Williams said. “I feel like I have something to hold up and just keep getting better at.”

Church praised Williams’ intangibles.

“He’s got good size, he shoots the ball well and he’s just a tough matchup,” Church said. “He scores well in the post but he can also step out and shoot it or take you off the dribble. I really think he’s going to take a big step this year and we’re excited.”

Williams’ main goal for 2022-23 is to win a state championship and build off his junior season.

“My expectation is to be better than we were last year,” Williams said. “I feel like I can be better this season.”

Following this season Williams said he will go on to play at the next level, but people will have to wait until the Tigers’ season concludes to see where he will play.

“I have plans to play after high school but I have kept that quiet,” Williams said. “I want to make sure I know all the colleges that want me and then I can make my final decision after basketball season.”

Williams and the Tigers begin play at 7 p.m. against Fox on Nov. 30 in the Eighth Annual Fountain City Classic in DeSoto, Missouri.
