Notre Dame's Eliza Barnette leads local golfers after first round of Class 4 state tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. — Notre Dame sophomore Eliza Barnette leads all local golfers after the first round of the MSHSAA Class 4 Girls Golf Championships on Monday at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin, Missouri.

Barnette finished the first round in a four-way tie for 11th place, shooting 10-over 82 on the par 72 course. She hit 10 pars, made six bogeys and two double bogeys.

Jackson senior Alana Gilbert sits two shots behind Barnette, shooting 12-over 84. She parred each hole aside from No. 3 on the front nine but struggled on the back nine, shooting a 46 that included a nine-stroke hole on the par-four No. 13.

Jackson senior Maggie Davey sits five strokes behind her teammate in a tie for 29th, shooting 17-over 89. Freshman Julia Schlitt (22-over 94), junior Harper Ready (23-over 95) and junior Grace Hightower (27-over 99) sit in 50th, tied for 51st and tied for 64th, respectively, for the Indians.

Notre Dame senior Paige Compardo goes into the second round in a five-way tie for 34th after shooting 18-over 90, while freshman teammate Grayson Maurer is tied for 54th with a 25-over 97.

The current leader, Maya McVey of Blue Springs South, shot 2-under 70 in the opening round, recording four birdies and eagling No. 7 while adding four bogeys.

Hightower is the first Jackson golfer to tee off on Tuesday, starting her round at 10:39 a.m. Ready (11:06 a.m.), Schlitt (11:15 a.m.), Gilbert (11:42 a.m.) and Davey (11:51 a.m.) follow.

Maurer tees off first for the Bulldogs at 11:06 a.m. while Barnette and Compardo will tee off together at 11:42 a.m.
