Tropics 18u defeat Northwest Bakersfield for berth in Babe Ruth World Series championship
EPHRATA, Wash. — The Southeast Tropics 18u squad has a chance at redemption on Saturday afternoon.
This time, it's for all the marbles.
The Tropics brought down the National Division's No. 1 seed in the Northwest Bakersfield Waves 2-1 on Friday night to punch their ticket to the Babe Ruth World Series championship game on Saturday against the Alabama Rawdogs — which gave Southeast its lone defeat in the tournament.
Southeast's defense was pivotal in the Tropics' win, led by a strong performance on the mound by Bladen Perry. Perry pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out four while his defense helped with the rest.
The Tropics benefitted from two Bakersfield errors, while they played a clean game.
Both teams scored their runs in the first inning, but the Tropics two-run outing was enough to put the Waves away.
Following a pair of singles from Nate Rhew and Trey Fikes, Brandon Palmer batted in the first run of the game on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Luke Barnes immediately stepped up and singled on a 2-2 count to plate the Tropics' second and final run of the game.
Bakersfield scored in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly, but a double play two batters later would end the inning.
Fikes and Ayden Morgan led the Tropics at the plate, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, respectively.
The Tropics improve to 33-7 on the season, and will face the Rawdogs at 1 p.m. Saturday for the World Series championship.
