Catfish split weekend games

The Cape Catfish split a pair of weekend games, as they topped Alton 4-3 on Friday at Capaha Field and fell at REX Baseball in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday 11-8.

In Friday's win, despite being outhit 10-6, the Catfish added a run in the eighth inning to prevail over the River Dragons.

With the score tied, Cape got a single from Kolten Poorman, who scored when Southeast Missouri State senior Danny Sperling reached on an error and Poorman came home.

Alton got a runner to second base in the ninth inning, but Catfish reliever Austin Brock struck out the next two batters to end the game and earn his second save of the season.

Former Kelly High School standout, Bryce Morgan, (1-1) got the win after pitching in the seventh and eighth innings.

He allowed two hits and no runs.

Poorman had two hits to lead the 'Fish offense.

In Saturday's loss, REX Baseball scored seven runs in the opening inning, as it sent 11 hitters to the plate.

Catfish starter Jordan Zuger lasted two-thirds of an inning, walking two and allowing six hits – including a three-run homer.

Cape (17-28 overall, 5-9 second half) answered with four runs in the second, as former Jackson standout, Lane Crowden and Andrew Sharp both reached base when they were hit by pitches.

Catfish hitter Jackson Jarvis and designated hitter Cam Hill connected for consecutive doubles that drove in Cape's first three runs.

Hill subsequently scored on an RBI ground-out hit by Christopher Hall.

The Catfish tied the game seven in the third inning, as recent addition, John Bolton, opened the inning with a double before moving to third base on a wild pitch.

Bolten scored when Crowden singled to centerfield.

Crowden then scored on Sharp's second double of the game, which was followed by an RBI single to right by Jarvis that drove Sharp home.

Both teams added single runs in the fifth inning to make the score 10-8 in favor of REX Baseball, with the hosts adding a run in the eighth.

Bolton had a pair of hits in the loss, as did Jarvis, Hill, and Sharp.

The Catfish will host Springfield on Monday at 6:35 p.m. before embarking on a five-game road trip over three days.

The 'Fish return to Capaha Field on Saturday against Quincy at 6:35 p.m.
