POPLAR BLUFF — Jackson got its points in the field and distance events but couldn’t make up the ground lost in the sprints Saturday at the MSHSAA Class 5 District 1 track and field meet.

St. Louis University High won the boys title while defending state champion Cardinal Ritter ran away with the girls title as Jackson finished second at Mules Stadium.

The host Mules finished third, nearly matching SLUH’s win total, while Poplar Bluff’s girls finished sixth.

More importantly, the top four in each advance to the sectional meet next week at Kirkwood.

Jackson’s Lillian Gibbs won the discus and javelin titles with Kimmora Carothers second in the javelin while Tony Terry Jr. won the shot with Noah Gibson second. Jackson also took the top two spots in the pole vault with Collin Havill and Braeden Cain.

Jackson’s 3200-relay of Mallorie Metzger, Maite Mendez Higuera, Brooklyn Burgess and Layla Fliege won while Metzger and Fliege the first two across the finish line in the 800.

Fliege was second in the 1600 followed by Burgess while Mendez Higuera was second in the 3200 with Fliege third. Stormee Rutherford finished second in the shot while Felicity Pingkian placed third in the pole vault.

Jackson’s girls couldn’t catch Cardinal Ritter, which won nine events, including six when the Lions were first and second. Ritter also took the top three spots in the 100-meters.

Poplar Bluff’s Emilee Cheek advanced in the 100 by placing fourth and was third in the 200. The Mules 800-relay was second to Cardinal Ritter while Haile Hall placed third in the javelin and Makyra Mead finished third in the shot to advance.

John-Paul Godwin swept the hurdle events, winning the 110-meter event in 15.00 seconds and the 300 in 41.60.

The Mules 400-relay of Luke Barousse, Justin Mitchell, Devin Gatewood and Kasen Hoss won in 43.00 seconds while Gatewood won the long jump and Isaiah Nevel won the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-feet, 3.5-inches in fewer attempts than teammate Alex Clinton, who placed second.

Poplar Bluff’s 800-relay was second to SLUH while Mitchell placed second in both the 100 and 200 finials with Hoss third in both events. Barousse finished third in the pole vault while Dalton Gatewood advanced in the long jump.

Poplar Bluff’s five wins gave the Mules a one-point lead for second place late in the meet until points from the throwing events came in to put Jackson into second place.

SLUH won six events, finishing first and second in both the 3200 and triple jump. SLUH sophomore Ryan Wingo won the 100 in 10.6 seconds and the 200 in 22.04.
