Baseball Roundup, April 26: Charleston and Portageville shutout opponents, Poplar Bluff downs New Madrid County Central

Charleston 7, Oak Ridge 0

Senior Chase Showmaker pitched seven shutout innings as Charleston (6-7, 2-1 Scott-Mississippi Conference) won 7-0 over Oak Ridge (2-9, 1-2 Scott-Mississippi Conference) at Hillhouse Park in Charleston.

Showmaker allowed just three hits while striking out eight and walking only one batter.

Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior Tyler Humphrey scored on a wild pitch and increased it to a 2-0 advantage in the second inning when sophomore Owen Willis scored off a single to centerfield by Showmaker.

Charleston scored three runs in the fourth inning after junior Brian Simmons scored on a sacrifice bunt by junior Bennett Logan, and junior Lane Morrow and senior Thomas Murray scored on aN error.

Charleston scored its final two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after sophomore Will Dixon scored on an error and Bledsoe score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Chase Worthy.

Senior Logan Dewitt took the loss for Oak Ridge. He pitched five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walked batter.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday, April 28.

Oak Ridge host St. Paul Lutheran (0-4) while Charleston hosts Oran (9-3, 1-0 Scott Mississippi Conference).

Portageville 10, Senath-Hornersville 0, F/4

The Bulldogs (17-3, 3-1 Bootheel Conference) celebrated senior night with a four-inning 10-0 win over the Lions (4-6, 1-2 Bootheel Conference) at Meatte Park in Portageville, Mo.

Junior Thomas Frakes earned the win after four shutout innings. He allowed two hits with six strikeouts and three walked batters.

Senior Alex Winsor pitched the final inning for Portageville, he did not surrender a hit and struck out three batters with one walk.

The Bulldogs' top performers at the plate and on the bases were sophomore Mason Adams (2-for-4, two RBIs, run scored, stolen base), senior CJ Kelley (2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, two stolen bases), sophomore Aaron Dunlap (1-for-2, two RBIs, run scored, two stolen bases) and Frakes (1-for-2 including a double, two RBIs).

Portageville travels to Kelly (12-7, 5-1 Scott-Mississippi Conference) on Friday, April 29. Senath-Hornersville travels to Twin Rivers (8-8, 1-2 Ozark Foothills Conference) on Thursday, April 28. Both teams will compete in the Bootheel Conference on Saturday, April 30.

Poplar Bluff 6, New Madrid County Central 4

The Mules (7-11, 4-2 SEMO Conference) won 6-4 over the Eagles (5-9, 1-4 SEMO Conference) at Poplar Bluff High School.

Poplar Bluff jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning when senior Kannon Carr scored on a hit by junior Kayson King, and another run in the bottom of the third inning when junior Aedan Dawes scored on a double by Kayson King.

Senior Matt Riley scored the NMCC’s first in the top of the fourth inning, but the Mules extended the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Dawes scored on a ground out.

The Eagles tied it 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning when senior Kenyon King and junior Carson Pfeffer scored on a double by senior Chris Grissom.

Poplar Bluff regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when junior David Durbin scored on an error and increased the lead when freshman Dylan Hall scored on a fielder’s choice and senior Brady Robertson scored on a wild pitch.

NMCC scored its final run in the top of the seventh inning when junior Clay Cope singled and senior Jace Robinson scored, but that was where the rally ended.

Kayson King earned the win after pitching the final 1.1 innings, allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts. Carr pitched the first four innings and allowed a run on two hits with 11 strikeouts and one walked batter. Junior Jakob Valenzuela also pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout and two walked batter.

Sophomore Brady Swims took the loss after pitching the final 2.2 innings. He surrendered two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walked batter. Robinson started and pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and six walked batters.

NMCC and Poplar Bluff will compete in the SEMO Conference tournament Friday, April 29, however, seeding has yet to be released.
