Baseball Roundup, April 14: Delta’s Lanson Cox leads Bobcats with solid pitching to a 7-1 win against Charleston at Capaha Field

Delta’s most recent college signee Lanson Cox pitched a complete game on the hill for the Bobcats, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven.

Delta to a 7-1 victory over Charleston during the first game of a doubleheader at Capaha Field Thursday afternoon.

Cox also delivered at the plate for Delta, scoring Mason Dozier on a triple in the top of the third inning.

Cox also drove in a run on a first-inning groundout that scored Dozier to give the Bobcats the early 1-0 lead.

Dozier got on base three times and scored in each of his opportunities.

The Bobcats walked 11 times as Charleston starting pitcher Bryant Gunn walked eight batters in six innings of work and relief pitcher Owen Willis walked three in one inning.

Blue Jays senior Thomas Murray drove in the lone run for Charleston in the seventh inning, scoring William Logan.

Delta (2-8) will contest East Prairie at 4:30 p.m. on Monday at East Prairie High School.

Charleston (5-5) will travel to Chaffee on Monday with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch scheduled in a doubleheader at Chaffee High School.

DeSoto 14, Perryville 2, Game 1

Perryville fell behind early and watched the game slip away as DeSoto continued to score in bunches, beating the Pirates 14-2 Thursday afternoon at Perryville High School.

The Dragons scored one run in the first inning, three times in the second and added five more in innings five and seven in the blowout victory.

Perryville starting pitcher Troy O’Keefe was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Caleb Triller threw 2 2/3 innings of relief and was shelled for 10 runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking five.

Pirate second baseman Elijah Derickson was 2-for-2 at the plate while Justin Wingerter supplied a hit and an RBI in the one-sided contest.

Perryville 7, DeSoto 5, Game 2

Perryville was able to split the doubleheader with DeSoto on Thursday, getting RBIs from Logan Hoehn, Dalton Fritsche and Tyler Jannin to beat the Dragons 7-5 in the nightcap.

Troy O’Keefe and Hoehn recorded multiple hits in a winning effort.

Perryville outhit DeSoto 7-6 and took advantage of six defensive errors while Dane Lauck threw 4 2/3 innings allowing just three runs on three hits. Lauck’s solid outing was overlooked by seven walks allowed but the junior struck out five, escaping multiple jams throughout the game.

Perryville (3-6) snaps a six-game losing skid and will host Windsor (Imperial) Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Meadow Heights 8, Bloomfield 4

Meadow Heights got a complete game and 11 strikeouts from starting pitching Kade Lindgren.

The senior helped his own cause at the plate, driving in two runs to help the Panthers turn away Bloomfield on Thursday 8-4 at Meadow Heights High School.

Fellow senior Tyson Mayfield provided the Panthers' offense with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Ransom Grindstaff, Chase Conrad and Koby Cook each drove in a run to down the Wildcats.

Lindgren gave up four runs on six hits and walking two with a season-high 111 pitches.

Evan Shackles recorded two hits for Bloomfield, and Kayden Craft, Ethan McRoberts, Kayden Vaughn and Cole Hartlein drove in one run each.

Caleb Upchurch was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats, throwing 5 1/3 innings and giving up eight runs and nine hits.

Meadow Heights (9-3) will play Scott City at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Scott City High School.

Bloomfield (3-7) has dropped six in a row with the Stoddard County Tournament looming on Monday as the Wildcats will play Advance at 4:30 p.m. at Advance High School.

Kelly 8, Scott City 2

Kelly third baseman Bryce Phelps went 3-for-4 with a run scored and five other Hawk batters drove in runs as Kelly downed Scott City 8-2 on the road Thursday at Scott City High School.

The Hawks' offense wouldn’t get going until the top half of the fifth inning when Kelly scored two runs off of Rams’ starting pitcher Blake Wilburn, who would be taken out of the game after throwing 5 2/3 innings giving up six runs on eight hits. Wilburn took the loss but struck out eight batters and allowed just one walk.

Dalton Forck was the winning pitcher for the Hawks, throwing 5 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking four while allowing just two runs on five hits.

Drew Klipfel closed the game out by striking out four of the six batters he faced.

Dalyn Littlepage recorded a hit and two RBIs and Gavin Venable had two hits in three at-bats offensively for Scott City.

Kelly (10-3) will look to keep a nine-game winning streak going against undefeated South Pemiscot on Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m. at Malden High School.

Scott City (4-7) has dropped four games in a row in the toughest stretch of the season for the Rams and will play Meadow Heights Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Scott City High School.

Jackson 10, Sikeston 0

St. Louis Community College signee Cayden Drum threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout against Sikeston on Thursday.

The senior struck out nine and walked one to lead Jackson to a 10-0 win over the Bulldogs at Jackson Indians Stadium.

Jackson leadoff hitter Henley Parker homered in a four-run second inning. He went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Junior Baden Hackworth also homered in the game for Jackson, drilling a solo shot in the second inning off of Sikeston starting pitcher Dylan Thornbourgh who was strapped for the loss in the game.

Thornbourgh and Carter Crow had one hit each off of Drum.

Jackson (11-2) will take on Northwest (Cedar Hill) this morning at 10 a.m. at Indian Stadium in Jackson.

Sikeston (2-10) will play Marshall County in Benton Ky., Saturday.

Woodland 8, Malden 5

Woodland rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Malden on Thursday at Woodland High School.

Grainger Yurevich and Seth Abernathy led the Cardinals offense with three RBIs and a double apiece. Yurevich was the lone Cardinal with multiple hits, going 2-for 3 at the plate.

Yurevich was tagged for five runs in four innings of work. He allowed six hits and walked four while striking out two.

Josy Cook earned the win, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking two in two innings of work. Cecil Abernathy was credited with the save, striking out one and walking one in the seventh.

Three Green Wave batters had multiple hits, with Trey Miller, Dylan Bader and Cooper Thomas recording two each. Bader gave Malden a 4-0 lead early with a grand slam in the first inning.

Thomas pitched four innings, allowing just two hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and walking one. Ethan Campbell took the loss, giving up a three-run double to Abernathy in the bottom of the sixth to put Woodland up for good.

BERNIE 12, TWIN RIVERS 2

The Mules had their offense rolling Thursday with 13 hits for a home win.

Reece Justice recorded four RBI while Owen Bewley drove in three runs for Bernie. Wyatt Nimmo picked up the win on the mound, giving up one earned run and striking out four in four innings.

The Mules scored three runs in the first and two in the second and took advantage of a seven-run fourth to put the game away.

For Twin Rivers, Jake Hester and Glendon Siebert each recorded two hits and a RBI.

Holcomb 5, Greenville 4

The Hornets were able to walk out of Greenville with a win, although it wasn't easy. The Hornets trailed most of the game but ended up taking the lead on a Nate Rhew double that scored two runs.

"Greenville is well-coached and a pretty good team," said Holcomb head coach Michael Snider. "They won their conference this year in the Ozark Foothills Conference. It was a big win for us."

The second inning was huge for Greenville as they scored three runs. Rhew was the winning pitcher in this one for Holcomb, as he did it on both sides of the plate, throwing strikes, and hitting some.

The righty gave up four runs, but also struck out ten. He also gave up only four hits. Holcomb collected seven hits on the day, as Trey Moody and Nate Rhew both had a multi-hit game.

"We took some good approaches today," stressed Snider. "Got a couple of big hits when we needed them. We threw strikes and we made enough plays to help us get out of there with a win."
