Area players named to MBCA all-state team

Charleston coach Jamarcus Williams was named Coach of the Year in Class 3 while junior Rico Coleman was named to the all-state team following the Bluejays championship run.

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association released its all-state team and final rankings Wednesday as several area athletes were honored.

Luke Northweather of Blair Oaks was named Mr. Show Me Basketball while Bella Fontleroy of Kickapoo was named Miss Show Me Basketball.

Charleston finished atop the Class 3 rankings with a 58-56 win over Lafayette County in the state championship game to finish a 29-3 season.

Coleman, who earned all-state honors for a second time, had 10 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and two assists in the championship game.

Also on the Class 3 all-state team were Caruthersville senior Zahmius Smith and Kelly senior Gavin Jansen.

Notre Dame senior Lexi Rubel and Sikeston senior Karris Allen were named to the Class 5 all-state team.

Rubel earned all-state honors for a third straight season. Notre Dame finished sixth in the final poll behind Rolla after losing to Webster Groves in the quarterfinal.

Delta senior Kendall Holweg and sophomore Addison Nichols were on the Class 1 team. Holweg was honored for a second straight year as Delta finished second at state.

Ellington junior Kaylee King and senior Gretchen Hackworth were named to the Class 2 team for a second time along with Van Buren senior Katie Griffin while Advance senior Alandry Below was also honored.

Ellington finished second at state, reaching the championship game for a second straight year.

Also in Class 2, Bernie junior Tristan Johnson, East Carter senior Preston Turner and Hayti senior Tray’von Thomas were all honored. Thomas was honored for a second straight year.

In Class 1, Leopold senior Caleb Schaab and Cooter junior Luke Barnes were honored.

New Madrid Central sophomore Jadis Jones in Class 4 as the Eagles finished third in the state.

Cape Central junior Cameron Williams was named to the Class 5 all-state team. The Tigers finished ninth in the final poll.

Jackson junior Katie Waller was named to the Class 6 all-state team.

Academic All-State honors went to Blake Anderson of Notre Dame, Kennett’s Ben McMullan, Bryce Phelps of Kelly, Saxony Lutheran’s Logan Pruitt and Chaffee’s Lilly Wessel.

Student-athletes who earned Academic All-State honors must have an ACT score of 27 or above, 1920 or above in the SAC or 185 or more on PSAT as well as a grade-point average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale.
