Baseball Roundup, March 19: Oran splits double header with Portageville and East Carter

Oran split two games played at East Carter High School to start the 2022 spring baseball season, losing 5-3 to Portageville then beat host East Carter in the nightcap 8-2 Saturday at East Carter High School.

The Eagles fell behind early 5-0 as the Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning and added two more in the third frame before scoring an additional run in the fourth inning. Oran got on the board in the top half of the fifth, plating two runs and added the third run in the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore infielder Ronald Adams led Portageville offensively going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Thomas Frakes added two hits while Chris Kelley and Donney Benthal added RBIs.

Benthal earned the win on the mound, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on six hits for the Bulldogs. He struck out four and allowed three walks.

Kolten Payne and Quentin Senciboy led the Eagles with two hits each and freshman Parker Bryant smashed a home run.

Bryant took the loss on the mound for Oran throwing just 2 ⅓ innings giving up four runs on four hits while striking out three and walking one.

Portageville (2-0) plays Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Portageville High School.

Oran (1-1) hosts Bloomfield at 4:30 p.m.on Tuesday at Oran High School.

In a pitcher'ss dual until the fourth inning when East Carter plated two runs, Oran tallied three runs in their half of the fourth and scored three more in the fifth frame and two runs in the sixth inning to down East Carter 8-2 Saturday at East Carter High School.

Quentin Senciboy went 3-for-4 at the dish, driving in three runs and scoring two of his own. Senciboy drove in runs on two doubles.

Catcher Nicholas Massey collected a double and two hits, while Seth Cauble also collected two hits and scored a run.

Nolan Loper earned the win on the pitching mound for the Eagles, throwing an inning of relief, striking out one and allowing two hits and two runs.

Oran starting pitcher Kolten Payne pitched effectively, throwing three innings allowing just one hit and zero runs. Payne struck out six and walked just one batter.

Junior Jason Carter collected two hits and scored a run but was the lone multi-hit batter for the Red Birds. Jacob Saffle drove in one run.

William Cooley was strapped with the loss on the mound, throwing five innings and giving up six runs on 11 hits. Cooley struck out two and walked two.

East Carter (0-2) plays Naylor at 4:30 p.m. on Monday at Naylor High School.

Portageville 15, East Carter 0

Portageville used an 11-run fourth inning to blow out host East Carter on Saturday.

The Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits in the game including three from Alex Winsor and three from Thomas Frakes. Mason Adams and Carson Bradley each had two hits, including a double from Adams.

CJ Kelly tossed four shutout innings to earn the win, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out three.
