Boys Basketball Roundup, Jan. 12: Bernie finishes off Kennett; Richland routs Zalma

John Nimmo scored 14 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Bernie Mules finish off Kennett 68-50 Tuesday night at Bernie High School.

The Mules shot out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter, but Kennett played them within four points over the middle two quarters. They led 33-21 at halftime 50-34 entering the fourth.

Noah Foster and Tristan Johnson joined Nimmo in double figures with 19 and 14 points, respectively.

Bernie sank seven 3-pointers with Johnson making four, Foster two and Michia Schooley one.

Elijah Jackson paced Kennett with 12 points.

Bernie (10-1) will meet Dexter in an SCAA matchup on Friday night at the Bearcat Event Center in Dexter. The JV game will start at 6.

Kennett (3-10) will host Notre Dame in a SEMO Conference game Friday. The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m.

Richland 71, Zalma 27

The Richland boys basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 71-27 victory over Zalma on Tuesday night at Essex.

Five Richland players scored in double figures with Jaden Pope producing 14 points. Eric Williams added 13, Damon Ivy 12, Tucker Hughes 11 and Matt Finch 10.

Eric Green paced Zalma with 11 points.

The Rebels held quarter leads of 16-4, 45-11 and 68-16.

Richland (4-8) host Advance with the JV game tipping off at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Zalma (1-5) will visit Oak Ridge with the junior varsity game starting at 6 p.m. Friday.

Portageville 86, Campbell 36

It didn’t take long for Portageville coach Jason Irby’s message to sink into his players after the first quarter of action Tuesday against Campbell. They came out refocused and ready to go, showing why the Bulldogs won the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament, dominating the Camels the rest of the way, outscoring Campbell after the opening quarter 70-26 en route to a 86-36 blowout victory at Campbell High School.

After scoring just 15 points in the opening quarter, Portageville looked like a team on a mission, led by senior Trey Townsend who poured in a game-high 24 points, scoring half of the output off of 3-pointers.

Three other Bulldogs managed to score double figures as Jabryson Rand supplied 14 points, Kelan Bills finished with 13 and Shane Townsend added 11 points.

Junior Seth Wallace who scored nine points led Campbell offensively followed by Ben Rowland who concluded the game with seven points.

Portageville (7-3) plays a road game at South Pemiscot (8-4) Friday at 6 p.m.

Campbell (3-10) is also on the road Friday at Hayti (7-2) on Friday with tipoff with the Indians at 6 p.m.
