Thompson's key hit in seventh lifts Sikeston over Fredericktown

FREDERICKTOWN, Mo. — Key hits from Dakota Thompson lifted Sikeston to a 3-2 road win over Fredericktown Tuesday.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Sikeston’s Sophia Carter singled to start the inning and advanced to third on two passed balls. Then Thompson singled to left, scoring Carter, giving Sikeston the slim 3-2 lead.

Fredericktown tried to mount a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second after back-to-back singles, but Sikeston pitcher Sarah Keller coaxed a pop-up to shortstop Nayla Bonner to earn the win.

Keller allowed two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Her only hiccup came in the bottom of the fourth when Fredericktown scored two runs. But Sikeston answered right back in the top of the fifth.

After Carter walked and Katie Payne was hit by a pitch, Thompson doubled to left, scoring Carter. The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 when Payne scored on a single from Hailey Cantrell.

Thompson finished the game a perfect 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Sikeston (9-13) hosts Kelly Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
