Volleyball Roundup, Sept. 21: Woodland downs in Cape Central in straight sets

Behind another solid all-around game from all-state hitter Addie Johnson, the Woodland Cardinals won their ninth out of 10 games on Tuesday, beating Cape Central in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.

Johnson recorded 21 kills, 14 digs and had six ace serves.

Chloe Goodwin produced double-digit kills and digs as well, adding 11 and 14.

Riley Massa produced seven kills to go with a game-high four blocks, as well as two aces.

Alley Whitener recorded a stout 35 assists and 11 digs while Hailey Brotherton was key defensively, earning 16 recorded digs.

Cape Central was led offensively by Ella Vogel’s 11 kills, while Madison Phelps added six kills and Maddie Thomas finished with 20 assists.

Defensively, Vogel recorded three blocks at the net while Phelps added six digs and Ava Nelson had five.

Coach Melissa Rinacke’s team is now 13-3 on the season and will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Meadow Heights.

Cape Central (2-2) will be right back in action tonight at 6 p.m. when the Tigers travel to Scott City to face the Rams.

Eagle Ridge Christian 3, Westwood Baptist 0

Eagle Ridge stayed perfect on the season on Tuesday, beating Westwood Baptist from Poplar Bluff at home in straight sets, 25-14, 25-5, 25-13, to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Rachel Margrabe led the offense for the Eagles with 14 kills, followed by Maylee Mason’s eight kills and Gracey Mink’s four kills.

Setter Sydney Gartman recorded a game-high 23 assists while Margrabe connected for four ace serves to lead in that category.

Defensively, Margrabe had three digs.

The Eagles will return to action at 5 p.m. on Friday when they travel to Heritage Christian in Fenton, Mo.

Ste. Genevieve 3, Saxony Lutheran 0

Saxony Lutheran dropped their fourth match in a row on Tuesday, losing on the road to Ste. Genevieve in straight sets, (15-25), (18-25), (21-25).

On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore hitter Clara Brune led the way with six kills while junior Josey Wahlers added four kills.

Landre Hoehn contributed 10 assists while Emma Voelker added seven.

Defensively for the Crusaders (5-7-3), Anna Thomason had three solo blocks while Wahlers added two.

Anna Mueller (14), Isabella Deckerd (13) and Emma Hinze (10) all contributed double-digit digs.

Saxony Lutheran will look to end its losing streak at home in a 7:30 p.m. Thursday matchup when the Crusaders host Farmington.

South Iron 3, Meadow Heights 1

Meadow Heights dropped its fifth match of the season on Tuesday, succumbing to South Iron in four sets, (26-28), (14-25), 25-21, (19-25).

Junior hitter Miranda Green led the way for the Panthers offensively, smashing a team-high 11 kills, while seniors Kambri Erzfeld and Halli Bollinger-Yount contributed six kills each.

Setter Ashley Allen helped the offense by handing out 24 assists while Ashley Gruenke recorded two aces.

Erzfeld led the Panthers (11-5) with 10 digs on defense, while Molly Conrad and Cheyenne Tonjum each provided two blocks each.

Meadow Heights will host 13-3 Woodland at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
