Baseball Roundup, Sept. 11: Bernie splits wood bat doubleheader

The Holcomb Hornets scored three runs in the sixth inning and six in the seventh to beat Bernie 11-2 Saturday in the Bernie Wood Bat Round Robin.

The Hornets led 2-1 entering the sixth and 5-2 entering the seventh.

Nate Rhew secured the victory. He gave up two runs on three hits with 18 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings.

Wyatt Nimmo was charged with the loss, allowing five runs — one earned — on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Holcomb’s Charles Heuring went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Rhew went 2 for 5 with a double and one RBI. Dylan Bradshaw went 1 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Hunter Lawrence went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Reece Justice homered, and Landon Ellsworth and John Nimmo doubled to account for all of Bernie’s offense.

Bernie (4-4) will travel to Oran for a 4 p.m. matchup Monday.

Holcomb (6-3) will travel to Greenville for at 4:30 p.m. matchup Monday.

Bernie 7, Campbell 0

John Nimmo pitched a five-hit shutout, leading the Bernie Mules to a 7-0 victory over Campbell on Saturday in the Bernie Wood Bat Round Robin.

The senior struck out nine and issued one walk in seven innings.

Samuel Bunting was assessed the loss, permitting four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and six walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Wyatt Nimmo went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs to lead Bernie’s six-hit attack.

Campbell committed two errors in the loss.

Van Buren 8, Bloomfield 1

Van Buren scored three first-inning runs and never trailed in an 8-1 victory over Bloomfield in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bloomfield.

After the Wildcats scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, Van Buren scored one in the second and four in the third.

Kayden Craft was assessed the loss, permitting eight runs — five earned — on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Caleb Upchurch went 2 for 3 with a double to lead Bloomfield’s seven-hit attack. Ethan McRoberts went 2 for 2 with a double, and Will Robison went 1 for 3 with a double.

No Van Buren statistics were available.

Bloomfield (1-5) will face Neelyville in a road matchup at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Van Buren (5-5) will host Lesterville at 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Van Buren 15, Bloomfield 3

The Van Buren Bulldogs blew open a tight game with seven runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth en route to a 15-3 victory over Bloomfield in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday at Bloomfield.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, and the score remained 2-2 entering the fourth.

Will Robison was charged with the loss, yielding 15 runs — seven earned — on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk in four innings.

Bloomfield committed five errors.

Robison went 2 for 3 to lead the Wildcats’ four-hit attack. Kayden Craft went 1 for 2 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored.
