SEMO roundup: Southeast volleyball claims CEFCU Invitational championship

PEORIA, Ill. – Southeast Missouri State’s volleyball team completed a clean sweep at the Bradley CEFCU Invitational, defeating DePaul, Bradley and Central Michigan en route to winning the tournament championship.

The Redhawks opened the tournament with a 3-1 (28-26, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23) victory over DePaul on Friday.

Junior Zoey Beasley paced the Redhawks with her first career double-double, recording 20 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Two other Redhawks recorded double-doubles as seniors Laney Malloy (16 digs, 10 kills, five assists and three blocks) and Claire Ochs (48 assists, 20 digs, six kills) also put up solid numbers.

Southeast faced tournament host Bradley and Central Michigan on Saturday, beating the Braves in four sets (25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 25-14) and sweeping the Chippewas (26-24, 25-22, 25-22) to claim the tournament title.

Malloy paced Southeast against Bradley, racking up 15 kills, seven digs, four blocks, three aces and two assists, while junior middle blocker Talia Gouard added 13 kills and a career-high eight blocks.

Ochs again led the way in assists with 44 in the contest and added 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend.

The senior would record her third double-double with 31 assists and 14 digs in a winning effort against Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon.

Malloy, Ochs and Tara Beilsmith were named to the CEFCU Invitational’s All-Tournament Team, and Malloy was named MVP.

The Redhawks (3-0) will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for Western Michigan’s Discover Kalamazoo Classic from Sept. 3-4 where they’ll face the Broncos, Purdue Fort Wayne and Indiana.

Mississippi State 1, Southeast 0 (Women’s soccer)

The Southeast women’s soccer team fell to Mississippi State the road Sunday.

The Redhawks held Mississippi State scoreless through the first 45 minutes but were outshot 19-5 by the Bulldogs.

Southeast goalkeeper Bailey Redden recorded eight saves in the game and Hannah Compernolle, Nadiia Ivanchenko, Mariah Johnson and Kate Daus each had a shot on goal.

Southeast (2-2) be on the road against Evansville for a 6 p.m. Thursday matchup.
