Swimming Roundup, Aug. 28: Cape Central, Poplar Bluff swimmers open season with state consideration times

WEST PLAINS, Mo. — Cape Central’s Phineas Theall and Elias Theall set pool records in winning their events Saturday at the West Plains Duals to open the swimming season.

Phineas Theall won two events in record time, the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-butterfly, Elias Theall won the 400-freestyle while the two teamed up with Owen Groves and Noah McRaven to place second in the medley relay.

Poplar Bluff swimmers also turned in state consideration times as the Mules placed third in an eight-team meet.

The Mules had a pair of relays finish under the standard to qualify for the state meet, as did junior Elijah McAtee in finishing third in the 400-freestyle.

Poplar Bluff finished with 363 points, 11 points behind the host while Monett won with 399.5 points. Cape Central finished sixth at 184.

Phineas Theall won the IM in 2 minutes, 31.27 seconds, breaking the pool record set in 2018 by 2.48 seconds. The freshman won the butterfly in 1:05.92, also a pool record by 0.06 of a second.

Elias Theall won the 400 in 4:29.72, breaking the pool record set in 2018 by 17.22 seconds.

The Tigers medley relay finished in 2:09.41, beating Poplar Bluff by 2.64 seconds. The Tigers also placed third in the 200-freestyle relay at 2:01.05, also under the state consideration time.

Groves was fourth in the 100-freestyle at 1:06.24 and fifth in the backstroke. McRaven finished seventh in the 400 and ninth in the 50 for Central.

Poplar Bluff’s McAtee placed second in the 100 breaststroke, Gavin Vaughn was second in the 200 IM and the 400-freestyle relay featuring McAtee, Vaughn, Carson Todd and Kastin Caudel finished second.

The 400-relay’s time of 4:18.19 was 7.06 seconds behind West Plain’s winning pace and 19-plus seconds under the state consideration time. Only the top 24 fastest times at the end of the season will advance to the state meet.

Poplar Bluff’s 200-medley relay, which finished third, also finished under the state consideration cut at 2:12.05.

McAtee’s 400 time of 4:53.56 was 0.03 of a second under the state standard but his converted time in the event was nearly 7 seconds faster than his school record set last season. He finished 0.85 of a second behind the winner in the breaststroke with a time of 1:23.6.

Vaughn finished the IM in 2:43.78 and was fourth in the 100-backstroke at 1:19.73.

Caudel was third in the IM at 2:53.31 and fourth in the 100-butterfly at 1:16.60.

Darius Sagharichi finished fifth in the 200 freestyle and 10th in the backstroke.

Carson Todd placed sixth in the 50-freestyle at 29.11 and 10th in the 200-freestyle while Christian Todd was sixth in the 400 and seventh in the backstroke. Owen McDaniel finished sixth in the breaststroke and ninth in the 200-freestyle while Cyrus Sagharichi was seventh in the butterfly and eighth in the IM.

Isaac Cato finished 14th in the 100-freestyle and 15th in the 50 while Henry Duncan finished 15th in the 100-freestyle and Billy Hirtz was 18th.
