Boys Baseball Roundup, Apr. 10: Red-Hot Saxony Lutheran beats Jefferson 5-1, starts season 9-0

The Saxony Lutheran Crusaders defeated Jefferson (Festus) Friday, 5-1, at home to start the season 9-0, their best start in the history of the program.

Saxony Lutheran head coach Paul Sander went with senior Eli Brown on the mound, and Brown did not disappoint.

The lefty threw five innings of one hit, one run ball, striking out 10, while only walking one, throwing 48 of his 68 total pitches for strikes.

Offensively, Lead off hitter Hunter Hamilton led the attack, going 2 for 2 at the plate, driving in a run, while scoring a run.

Junior Zac Lewis went 1 for 1 at the dish, driving in three RBIs, to lead the Crusaders in runs driven in, while Tanner King led in runs scored with two.

Saxony Lutheran (9-0) will host Leopold (2-2) Monday, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Cooter 13, Galena 3

The undefeated Cooter Wildcats built 10-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning as it beat Galena 13-3 Friday night.

Gabe McLevain finished 2 for 3 with two doubles and team-high three RBIs. Carson Swan was 3 for 3 with three singles and three RBIs. Talon King had a double and two RBIs. Luke Barnes finished 3 for 5 with two doubles and one RBI, Rhoads Lynn had a hit and one RBI, Hayden Nazarenes finished 3 for 5 with one RBI, and Chris Crowder also drove home one run.

Barnes allowed two runs (one earned), one hit, struck out eight, and walked seven in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Barnes threw 95 pitches.

Andy Carrillo pitched one inning and Nazarenes pitched 1 1/3 inning. Carrillo allowed one unearned, three hits, struck out zero, and walked zero. Nazarenes allowed no runs, two hits, struck out three, and walked zero.

Cooter (6-0) will take on Richland at 10 a.m. and Winona at noon Saturday.

Jackson 13, New Madrid County Central 0

Four Jackson pitchers combined to throw a two-hit shutout Thursday, as the Indians walloped New Madrid County Central, 15-0.

Sophomore Clayton Ernst started the on the mound for Jackson head coach Tatum Kitchen, throwing two innings of no runs or no hits ball, striking out three while issuing zero walks.

Adam McClanahan took the mound in the third inning, throwing a scoreless inning of work, allowing just one hit while striking out one without issuing a walk.

Quenton Dacus then pitched a solid inning of relief, striking out two and walking two.

Lastly, Josh Appleman pitched the final three outs, throwing a perfect fifth inning, striking out one.

The Jackson offense scored 13 runs on eight hits, as Caden Bogenpohl and Cameron Marchi had two hits each, as both hitters drove in two RBIs each. Bogenpohl tripled to drive in the two RBIs while Marchi smashed two doubles.

Brendan Gallaher drove in a game-high three runs to lead the Indians in RBIs.

New Madrid County Central (0-7) simply could not get anything going offensively, as starting pitcher Matt Riley suffered the loss, giving up 13 runs (four earned) over just two innings pitched.

He didn't strike anyone out and walked three.

Jackson (8-2) will play a double-header against Rockwood Summit (7-5) at Rockwood Summit High School in Fenton at 10 a.m., then play Ladue Horton Watkins at 12 p.m.

New Madrid County Central will host Portageville (6-3) Monday at 6 p.m.
