Girls Softball Roundup, Mar. 20: Oran wins season opener on road against Bloomfield

The Oran softball team started their spring season on the road against Bloomfield Friday and found victory rather easily, winning 12-2.

The Eagles took a 3 to 0 lead in the top half of the second inning and added a single run in the third frame before scoring three more runs in the fourth inning.

Oran scored three more in the sixth and added two in the final frame, scoring several of their runs on Bloomfield errors (7).

Oran only recorded six hits in the game, led by senior Kennedi McVay, going 2 for 5 in the lead-off slot, scoring a run with one of her hits being a triple.

Rylee Boshell went 2 for 4 in the contest, scoring three times and also recorded a walk.

Alyssa Spane had one hit in three at bats, driving in two and also scored a run.

Bloomfield (0-1) could only muster five hits themselves, as five players recorded one hit each (Karsyn Phillips, Emilie Hancock, Abigail Brown, Melanie Phillips, and Mahkiya Voice).

Brown drove in the only run in the game for the Wildcats.

The big story in the game was pitching for both teams.

Alyssa Spain (1-0) earned the win for the Eagles (1-0), throwing a complete game. She struck out 16, never allowing a walk while only giving up one earned run on five hits.

Melanie Phillips (0-1) recorded the loss, only giving up two earned runs on six hits, striking out a game high 18 but also walking nine.

She also threw 185 pitches.

Oran will host Scott City Monday at 4:30 p.m. while Bloomfield will host Puxico the same day at 4:30 p.m.

Marion (Ark.) 7, Kennett 2

The Kennett Indians softball team fell to Marion (Ark.) 7-2 in its season opener at the Brookland Blast in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Friday.

Marion built a 3-0 lead in the four-inning game after it scored a run in the top of the second inning and two more runs in the top of the third inning.

Kennett cut the deficit to 3-1 when it plated its first run in the bottom of the third inning but Marion followed with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to build a comfortable 7-1 lead.

Caroline Byers hit a sole home run in the bottom of the fourth inning for Kennett.

Hannah Davis also tallied an RBI in the bottom of the third inning for the Indians.

Kelsey Baker drove home a pair of runs for Marion. Kyndell Bailey, Emerson Miller, and Anna Murphy also plated one RBI each for Marion.

Ann Murphy pitched all four innings for Marion and Anelle Harris pitched all four innings for Kennett.

Kennett (0-1) continues play at the two-day tournament Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Tuckerman (Ark.) 17, Holcomb 0

The Holcomb Hornets fell behind 12-0 in the top of the first inning and never recovered as it dropped its opener to Tuckerman (Ark.) 17-0 Friday at the Brookland Blast in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Tuckerman, which hit two home runs, out hit Holcomb 16-2.

Katelyn Danley and Hannah Burk each had one hit for Holcomb.

Freshman Makaylie Gist and A. Alton both finished 2 for 4 with five RBIs each for Tuckerman.

Sophomore MacKenzie Soden pitched all four innings for Tuckerman. She struck out three and walked zero while throwing 46 pitches.

Macy Houart pitched the first 3 1/3 innings for Holcomb. She allowed 17 runs, walked three, and walked four.

Alyssa Brown got the final out for Holcomb in the circle. Brown allowed two hits.

Holcomb (0-1) continues play at the two-day tournament Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Delta 20, Advance 10

The Delta Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as the game was tied at 10 but a Teriana Crowden double that scored what would become the game winning run as Delta added to that lead to beat Advance Friday 20-10.

The Delta offense was led by Hannah Bond who went 4 for 4 in the game, with three singles in the second, fourth, and fifth innings and also added a double in the fifth as the team batted around.

Sophomore Sadie Hornbuckle earned the win, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits, striking out four.

The Bobcats offense managed 20 hits in the contest, with Bond, Brooke Coomer, Presley Holweg, Kendall Holweg, and Trinity Vandeven all recorded multiple hits in the game.

The Bobcats (1-0) will host Charleston Monday at 4:30 p.m. while Advance (0-1) travels to Woodland Monday with first pitch at 4:30.

Senath-Hornersville with Southland 3, Gideon with Risco 1

The Senath-Hornersville with Southland softball team fell behind 1-0 but rallied to edge Gideon with Risco 3-1 Friday on opening day.

Gideon with Risco led 1-0 after Carlie Stephens drove home a run in the top of the first inning.

Senath-Hornersville with Southland tied things up at 1-all when Katie McClelland hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Senath-Hornersville with Southland moved ahead 3-1 when it scored the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The go-ahead run scored on an infield error and the final run crossed home plate when McClelland collected an RBI hit.

Both pitchers went the distance.

Jenna Gibson, who has signed with the University of Memphis, allowed one unearned run, six hits, and struck out 15 in a seven-inning 98-pitch performance for Senath-Hornersville with Southland.

Stephens allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits of work for Gideon with Risco. Stephens surrendered six hits, struck out eight, and did not walk a hitter in a six-inning 82-pitcher performance.

Molly Fortner went 2 for 3 at the plate for Gideon with Risco.

Gibson and McClelland were also 2 for 3
