Boys Basketball Roundup, Feb. 24: St. Vincent defeats Puxico to advance to semifinals in Class 2, District 3

St. Vincent avoided the first round upset as they took down sixth seeded Puxico at home Tuesday in the Class 2, District 3 quarterfinals, 62-47.

Puxico brought the fight, staying right with the home Indians, as St. Vincent could never shake Puxico for good.

St. Vincent held advantages of three points at the end of the first quarter, eight points at halftime, 12 points at the end of the third period, and ended the game winning by 15.

Evan Dewilde led the home Indians with 17 points, while John Wibbenmeyer finished right behind, adding 16 points.

Phillip Ernst also finished in double figures, scoring 13 points for the 19-4 St. Vincent Indians.

Puxico got 19 points from senior Dalton Andrews and 10 points from junior Brayton Bridges.

St. Vincent advances to the next round with a date with another 19-4 team, Advance, Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Advance.

Puxico ends their season with a 5-17-1 record.

Scott County Central 61, Risco 57

SIKESTON — Scott County Central senior Bralyn Porter didn’t want his final season on the court to end in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 1 Tournament.

Porter had 29 points in the Braves 61-57 upset win over top-seeded Risco.

Kamron Meese led Risco with 25 points.

Kaden Sadler and Keron Banks each added 10 points for Scott County Central, while Evan Pipkin had 12 points for Risco.

Scott County Central plays No. 2 seed Gideon at Richland High School on Thursday, at 6:30 p.m.

Bernie 73, Hayti 50

Five Bernie players scored in double figures, and the second-seeded Mules beat third-seeded Hayti 73-50 on Tuesday in the semifinal round of the MSHSAA Class 2 District 1 Tournament at Bernie High School.

Landon Zoll scored a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Mules. John Nimmo added 18, Tyler Suiter had 14, Johnny Vaughn 12 and Noah Foster 10.

Elijah Burnett paced Hayti with 14 points, and Tyleik Moore had 11.

Bernie held quarter leads of 16-10, 31-21 and 49-33.

The Mules (20-5) will meet top-seeded Campbell (20-4) in the championship game at 8 p.m. Thursday at Holcomb High School. Campbell beat South Pemiscot 78-68 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

Hayti finished the season with a 9-11 record.

GIDEON - The Gideon Bulldogs boys basketball program moved one step closer to its first district title since 2015 Tuesday night.

No. 2 seeded Gideon outscored No. 3 seeded Richland by single digits in each of the final three quarters on its way to a 70-50 home victory.

Richland led 18-15 after one quarter before Gideon moved ahead 31-26 by halftime and increased its lead to 51-37 by the end of the third quarter on its way to a 20-point win.

Brevin Vires, who made 8 of 9 free throws, paced Gideon with 24 points. Payton Woodard added 19 points and Dalton Manning contributed 16 points for Gideon.

Tanner Freeman, who hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half, paced Richland with 22 points. Jaden Pope also scored in double digits with 10 points. Damon Ivy finished one behind with nine points and Shai Sheffield tallied seven points for Richland.

Richland finishes its season with a record of 9-14.

Gideon (10-13) will play No. 5 seeded Scott County Central (5-11) in the Class 1, District 1 championship Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Richland High School. Scott County Central pulled off its second upset of the district as it beat No. 1 seeded Risco 61-57 in its semifinal Tuesday.
