Redhawks honored by OVC

Southeast Missouri State senior first baseman Austin Blazevic

Southeast Missouri State senior baseball players helped the Redhawks get off to a solid start to the 2021 season this past weekend and were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference on Monday for doing so.

Austin Blazevic and Dylan Dodd were the OVC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Blazevic, a first baseman, won his second OVC Player of the Week honor, while Dodd, a left-handed pitcher has been recognized three times.

Blazevic hit .455 with five runs scored, a double, walk, and one RBI to lead the Redhawks to a 2-1 series victory at South Alabama.

He notched multiple hits in back-to-back games and in Sunday's finale, Blazevic rallied the Redhawks in the ninth inning, where they scored three runs to get a 6-5 lead.

Blazevic started the inning with a single and SEMO sent eight hitters to the plate during its big inning.

Following a Jaguar rally to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, Blazevic ripped a double down the right-field line to score Danny Wright for the go-ahead run all the way from first base.

Meanwhile, Dodd struck out eight and allowed only one walk in six innings to lead SEMO to a season-opening 4-2 win over USA on Friday.

He moved to 2-1 in his career on opening day.

Dodd got stronger as the game went along en route to nailing down his first win of 2021. He retired 12 of the last 13 hitters he faced.

Dodd pitched back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fifth and sixth frames.
