Volleyball Roundup, Oct. 15: Cape Central finally gets revenge on Notre Dame, wins 3-2 in five set thriller

Cape Central finally got the proverbial “monkey off their back” Thursday as they beat Notre Dame for the first time in over a decade, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-25, 17-15, in a five set thriller!

Nine different Tigers got into the stat line, as Ella Vogel finished with 25 kills, seven blocks, and 11 digs.

Madison Phelps also recorded double digit kills with 13 while also finishing with 11 digs.

Daley Drum added six kills to go with four blocks and five digs.

Lilly Ogburn had five kills and three digs.

Jolie Kidd added 17 digs to go along with two aces.

Emily Spinner recorded a game high 30 assists with 16 digs and two aces.

Maddie Thomas had 21 assists with 10 digs, Emma Winkler pitched in three kills, and Sophia Sapp added two aces.

Cape Central (15-9-2) will wrap up the regular season Monday when they travel to Poplar Bluff with game time at 6:30 p.m.

Park Hills Central 3, Saxony Lutheran 0

In their third game in four days, the Saxony Lutheran volleyball team lost in straight sets to a tough Park Hills team Thursday, 13-25, 8-25, 16-25.

Head Coach Emily Wahlers summed up the loss this way, "It was a difficult night for the junior varsity and varsity. This was our third game this week, and the second away game in as many days and the girls were not fired up as they needed to be. The JV fought hard but just couldn't get things to workout for the win. The varsity was hustling but things just didn't fall into place tonight."

The loss drops the Crusaders to 8-16-2 on the season.

The Saxony Lutheran junior varsity also lost 24-26 and 17-25 while the freshman won 25-11 and 25-20.

Jackson 3, Sainte Genevieve 1

Jackson won a tough match Thursday over a very solid Ste. Genevieve team in four sets, 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 25-11 to collect their 21st win of the season.

Katelyn Miller recorded 37 digs while Hanna Shinn led the offense with 12 kills and four blocks.

Mia Trankler recorded nine kills and three blocks.

Nadia Waselewski tallied nine kills while Haylee Quatmann and Olivia Ward had six kills each.

Madelyn Bourner finished with 47 assists.

Jackson (21-4) hosts Perryville Monday at 6:30 p.m.

The Jackson junior varsity won 25-16 and 25-10 as well as the freshman over Ste. Genevieve 25-11 and 25-22.

Meadow Heights 3, Clearwater 1

Gracie Cook led the way with 21 kills and 17 digs for Meadow Heights as they earned their 13th victory of the season Wednesday beating Clearwater 26-24, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19.

Kylee Denman helped in the win recording 15 assists to go with seven digs and three aces.

Ashley Gruenke had a game high 23 digs.

Kambri Erzfeld finished the game with five kills, 14 digs, and an ace.

Ashley Allen had nine assists, eight digs, to go with a block and an ace.

Meadow Heights(13-11-1) will host 4-9 Bell City Monday at 5 p.m.

Jackson 3, Scott City 0

The Jackson girls volleyball team won their 20th victory of the season Wednesday as they handled Scott City easily on the road, winning in straight sets 25-14, 25-11, 25-16.

Jackson was led by Emma Spraggs and Grace Johnson who each had three kills.

Spraggs and Johnson also had a block each as well as a dig by Spraggs.

Riley O'Neal finished with five service points and an ace while Madalyn Dameron recorded three digs.

For Scott City, it was Avarie O'Brien leading the way with eight kills while Sabrina Henson recorded 10 assists.

McKenzie Sweet had 12 digs with Liza Dannenmueller and Jersey Black recorded three blocks each.

Jackson(20-4) plays Ste. Genevieve next while Scott City(6-14-3) travels to Clearwater Monday to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m.

Eagle Ridge 3, Westwood Baptist Academy 0

The Eagle Ridge volleyball team won Wednesday night, defeating Westwood Baptist Academy in straight sets, 25-7, 25-11, 25-14.

Leading the Eagles was Rachel Margrabe who had 18 kills.

Sydney Gartman recorded 16 assists while Jasmine Brown added 15 digs and four aces.

Oak Ridge 3, Bell City 1

Oak Ridge won a late season contest Wednesday night beating Bell City 22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-22 to improve to 12-6.

Paige Glueck led the Blue Jays with 13 kills, 19 digs, and seven service points.

Zoe Berry also recorded a stout game finishing with 21 assists, 17 digs, and 14 service points.

Mylee Schilling recorded five kills, seven digs to go with 18 service points.

Abby Morrison tallied 11 digs and 22 service points.

Allison Seabaugh got in the stat column with 14 digs and 14 service points.

Bailey Urhahn recorded nine digs and 13 service points.

Oak Ridge will finish out the regular season tonight hosting Greenville at 7 p.m.

Saxony Lutheran 3, Sikeston 0

The Saxony Lutheran girl's volleyball team recorded their eighth victor of the season Wednesday beating Sikeston on the road in straight sets, 25-7, 25-18, 25-15.

Lauren Barnes led the way for the Crusaders with 35 service points.

Head coach Emily Wahlers stated, "We played really well tonight. We adjusted well to Sikeston's offense. The girls exhibited great teamwork and we were able to get the win."

Saxony Lutheran(8-16-2) will play Oran today at home at 6:30 p.m.

Tri-County Conference Volleyball Tournament

The Holcomb Hornets booked its spot in the championship of the Tri-County Conference varsity volleyball tournament with a pair of wins at Clarkton High School Thursday.

No. 2 seeded Holcomb beat No. 7 seeded Holcomb 25-11, 25-20, 25-17 in a quarterfinal.

It followed by outlasting No. 3 seeded Clarkton 16-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-9, 17-15 in a five-set semifinal.

Clarkton (18-8-1) beat North Pemiscot in straight sets in the other quarterfinal Thursday.

Holcomb (12-6) will take on 10-time defending champion Gideon (25-1-1) in the title game Friday at 6 p.m. at Clarkton High School.

Poplar Bluff 3, Eminence 2

Poplar Bluff edged Eminence in a five-set thriller Thursday night, 18-25, 25-29, 19-25, 25-17, 15-12, at the Senior High Gym.

Sierra Sievers had five aces and 10 kills with a block while Lily Johnson also had 10 kills for the Mules. Zoe Savat had 31 assists, Zhoe Bumpus had an ace with two digs while Hannah Corcimiglia Natalie Whitehead each chipped in eight kills. Olivia Carda had five digs as Poplar Bluff won for the second straight match.

The Mules (6-16-4) will host Cape Central on Monday before pool play in the SEMO Conference Tournament a night later in Cape Girardeau.
