POTOSI, Mo. — From a fumble on their first play from scrimmage, the Sikeston Bulldogs faced an uphill battle all night Friday, falling to Potosi on the road 39-25.

After a penalty on the opening kickoff negated a good return, Potosi recovered a Bulldog fumble inside the 5-yard-line on the opening play from scrimmage. The Trojans then scored on the next play when Wade Mercille ran the ball in from the four-yard-line, and Sikeston trailed 7-0 just 20 seconds into the game.

Sikeston immediately found life, however, as Daniel Lawrence returned the ensuing kickoff for an 89-yard touchdown, tying the game at seven — after a Dylan Thornbrough extra-point kick — 33 seconds in the game.

However, Potosi controlled the rest of the first quarter as Amondre McCaul scored on a 28-yard run with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter, putting the Trojans ahead 14-7. Then Potosi took advantage of another Sikeston fumble when Zane West scooped up the miscue and ran 30 yards for the score with 6:33 left in the opening quarter, putting the Trojans up 20-7.

That score would remain until 4:40 left in the third quarter when Mercille scored on a 16-yard run to give Potosi a 27-7 lead.

Sikeston answered back when quarterback Joseph Heckemeyer threw one of his two touchdowns, a 10-yard strike to Trace Sullivan and the Bulldogs trailed 27-14 after Thornbrough’s point after.

Thornbrough then kicked a 26-yard field goal, and Sikeston trailed 27-17 with 9:19 left in the game.

Potosi’s Blake Henson would then score on a 13-yard run with 5:34 remaining putting the Trojans up 33-17.

Heckemeyer, who finished with a career-high 211 yards on 22 of 31 passing, would hit Lawrence for a 35-yard touchdown pass while also adding a two-point conversion pass to Jonathan Green, to make it 33-25 with 4:27 remaining.

Potosi sealed the game with 2:59 remaining when Andrew Coleman scored on a 10-yard run.

The Bulldogs struggled to stop the Potosi (4-3) ground attack, allowing 335 yards on 59 carries while Coleman completed 5 of 5 passes for 41 yards.

Sikeston, who dropped their fifth-straight game after opening the season with two-straight wins, could only manage 45 yards on the ground on 23 carries. Lontas McClinton led the way with 47 yards on 14 carries while the rest of the team netted negative-two yards.

Sikeston was originally scheduled to play Charleston Friday night, but COVID-19 at the Mississippi County school forced the cancellation. This will be the first year since 1918 that the two schools have not met on the football field.

Sikeston is scheduled to host New Madrid County Central (3-4) Friday night at 7 p.m. NMCC has dropped their last three games, all three to undefeated, state-ranked teams.
