Softball Roundup, Oct. 8: Perryville pitching and defense stifles Notre Dame, shuts out Bulldogs

In a game between two very solid softball teams, it was the Perryville Pirates’ sophomore starting pitcher Alyson Stortz who gave the performance of the season, shutting down Notre Dame’s high octane offense, winning 1-0 Thursday.

Stortz gave head coach Dustin Wengert her best “ace” performance, pitching the complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out three and walking one to earn the win.

But it wasn’t just the pitching of Stortz that led to the victory. She had an ultra-solid defense behind her as well as the Perryville fielders never faltered through the seven inning contest.

The Pirates offense was able to push across their lone run in the fourth inning off of a double hit by Anna Korando off of Bulldog starter Hailey Burnett that scored Mckayla Pecaut.

Burnett took the hard-luck loss for Notre Dame as she pitched equally as well, giving up just the single run on six hits, striking out six and walking zero.

The Bulldog offense just wasn't able to get anything going against the pitching and defense put on display by Perryville.

The win propels Perryville to a 15-4 record on the season while loss is just Notre Dame’s second on the season, dropping them to 21-2.
