Baseball Roundup, Oct. 1: Advance holds off late rally by Bell City, wins 8-5

Advance’s Jack Bailey struck out the side in the seventh inning, leaving the bases loaded in the Hornets’ 8-5 victory over the Bell City baseball team Thursday at Bell City.

The Cubs were playing their first game since Sept. 11 because of a COVID-19 outbreak at the school.

The Cubs scored two runs in the seventh inning.

Advance took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Cubs scored three in the third to take the lead. Advance scored two in the fourth to tie the score and three in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Gus Garner, the winning pitcher, allowed four runs — three earned — on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

Bailey allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts in one inning to pick up the save.

Easton Newell was assessed the loss, giving up three runs on one hit with one strikeout and three walks in one inning.

Hayden Laird went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Hornets.

Bryson Maddox went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for Bell City. Nate Stone singled in three at-bats and drove home two.

Seventh-seeded Bell City (2-3) will meet second-seeded Malden in the first round of the Campbell Fall Baseball Classic at 1 p.m. Saturday at Malden.

Advance (8-5) will compete in a round robin Saturday at Charleston. The Hornets will face East Carter at 3 p.m. and Charleston at 5:30 p.m.

Campbell 29, Risco 0

Campbell beat Risco 29-0 in three innings Thursday.

Kaden Siebert had a home run and four RBIs. Gordon Todd also tallied four RBIs. Nine other Campbell players recorded at least one RBI.

Skylar Morrison, Charles Parker, and Blake Fowler each pitched a scoreless inning for Campbell.

No. 1 seeded Campbell (9-2) begins play at its own nine-team tournament Saturday. Campbell will take on the winner of a play-in game Saturday morning between No. 8 seeded Bernie and No. 9 seeded Senath-Hornersville.

Holcomb 17, Senath-Hornersville 4

The Holcomb Hornets scored a dozen runs in the top of the fourth inning as it beat Senath-Hornersville 17-4 Thursday.

Zander Owens, Mike Weldon, Connor Patterson, and Jesus Luna drove home a run for Senath-Hornersville.

Holcomb (8-4) plays Neelyville Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Campbell Invitational at Malden.

Senath-Hornersville (2-6) plays Bernie Saturday at 10 at the Campbell Invitational at Campbell
