KENNETT, Mo. - Four years ago a group of Holcomb citizens began searching for a way to provide additional classroom resources to the teachers at their school district.

“We met in 2016 and established the Holcomb Education Foundation in 2017,” Holcomb native Mark McClendon said. “One of our first ideas to raise money was to put on a golf tournament. We held our first tournament in the summer of 2017. The event continues to grow a little bit each year and has turned into a great fundraiser for our school.”

A total of 54 golfers gathered to compete in the fourth annual Holcomb Education Foundation Golf Scramble Friday at Kennett Country Club. After expenses were paid $13,250 was raised at the event.

“We’ve been able to raise over $48,000 for our classrooms over the last four years,” Holcomb Education Foundation Treasurer Sarah Jo Morgan said. “We are extremely thankful to all the golfers and sponsors who have participated in and supported the event.”

One added feature at the tournament this year that raised an additional $2,200 was a golf ball drop. Over 200 golf balls were sold for the golf ball drop with prizes being awarded for the ball that landed closest to the hole. The balls were dropped from the top of a fire truck ladder provided by the Kennett Fire Department.

“That was something new,” Morgan said. “We really enjoyed having it. We are very thankful to the Kennett Fire Department for assisting us with it.”

The Holcomb Education Foundation has used the money raised at the tournament in recent years to grow tomatoes in their classrooms, purchase a science watershed board, provide a reading center for first grade, buy IPads with educational programs, purchase a 3-D printer, create a new seating area in a resource room, put up a display board and fund field trips to the Holocaust Museum.

“We are very proud to have so many supporters,” McClendon said. “We’ve really had good luck obtaining sponsors. The teachers and kids benefit greatly from the money raised. People get to come out and enjoy a day of golf for a very good cause. Every single dollar raised goes back into the classroom.”
