MULES RECAP: Foul shots, last-second block help Poplar Bluff girls stay unbeaten in SEMO play

Abby Turner sank a pair of foul shots with 10 seconds left and Kiley Bess partially blocked a 3-point shot in the closing seconds to keep the Poplar Bluff girls basketball team unbeaten in conference play.

Bess gave the Mules a one-point lead on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds remaining and Turner was sent to the line after coming down with a defensive rebound. Turner sank both to give Poplar Bluff a 62-59 SEMO Conference win over Saxony Lutheran.

Turner finished with a season-high 16 points and Bess scored 21. Sierra Sievers scored six of her 11 points in the third quarter while Katie Pattillo scored all nine of her points in the first half for the Mules (12-8).

Poplar Bluff improved to 4-0 in SEMO Conference play, keeping pace with Notre Dame (6-0) atop the standings.

Saxony Lutheran (12-10, 2-3 SEMO) was led by Emma Brune's 23 points and 21 by Olivia Spawley.

Poplar Bluff led 48-38 entering the fourth quarter before Bess scored but the Crusaders put together a 13-3 run to get within a 53-51 following a 3-pointer by Alice Hogendobler. She later tied the game at 55-all with a 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark.

Spanley put Saxony ahead but, after the teams traded misses, Bess sank a 3-pointer for a 58-57 lead with 1:42 to play.

Spanley scored for the lead on the ensuing possession but Bess was fouled with 36 seconds left. The senior sank both ends of the one-and-one for a 60-59 advantage.

Turner also sank a one-and-one to set the final score.

Poplar Bluff led 23-15 after one quarter but Saxony scored the next six points before Pattillo scored. The Mules led 35-26 at halftime and Turner made it an 11-point lead to start the third quarter.

The Mules will host their final home game of the season Thursday against Oran.
