Poplar Bluff's Hays, Kirkman voted Semoball Players of the Week

Poplar Bluff's Gavin Hays and Olivia Kirkman were voted the boys and girls Semoball Players of Week, respectively, in balloting that concluded Wednesday night.

Hays, who had 116 votes, won the 220-pound weight division at Parkway South's Patriot Classic. He collected four wins in that tournament and has started the wrestling season 6-0.

Sikeston grappler Jonathan Green was runner-up, followed by Dexter's Travis Waldner, Kennett's Zachary Kulin and Cape Girardeau Central's John Pullen.

Kirkman, who received 382 votes, won two individual swimming events (100 and 200 freestyle) plus two relays as the Mules won their meet Thursday. Kirkman also won the butterfly and helped in two relay wins in a meet Tuesday in Arkansas, which the Mules won by 96 points. Jackson swimmer Madalyn Harris (239) was runner-up, followed by Sikeston wrestler Cherei Jones, Saxony Lutheran diver Bailey Thompson and Cape Central grappler Kaylee Armstrong.


In varsity boys action Wednesday, Kelly defeated Leopold 41-35. Gavin Jansen scored 15 points and Drew Dirnberger had 10 for Kelly, while Mason Deck netted 14 for Leopold. Kelly won the JV game, 61-40.
