STATESMAN ROUNDUP: Dexter wrestling stays unbeaten; Advance boys basketball improves to 2-0 in SCAA

The Dexter Bearcats won 11 of 14 matches Tuesday night to beat New Madrid County Central 56-18 in a dual wrestling match at New Madrid.

Bryston Pemberton (120 pounds) Dylan Homan (152), Alex Townsend (160), Caleb Coons (195) and Shawn Robards (220) won by pinfall, as the Bearcats improved to 3-0 this season.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Advance 74, Bell City 36

The Advance boys basketball team improved to 2-0 SCAA play Tuesday night with a 74-36 victory over the Cubs at Bell City.

The Hornets (4-1) opened league play Monday night with an 87-50 win over Puxico.

Bell City (2-2, 0-1 SCAA) led 14-13 after one quarter, but the Hornets outscored the host team 21-10 in the second to take a 34-24 halftime lead. Advance carried a 63-30 lead into the final quarter.

Jack Below led a balanced Advance attack with 17 points. Zach Simms scored 15, including two 3-pointers, and Hayden Laird had 12 points.

Bryson Maddox and Luke Nichols paced Bell City with nine points each.

Bernie 73, Clarkton 38

The Bernie Mules shot out to an early lead and rolled to a 73-38 victory over the Clarkton boys basketball team Tuesday night at Clarkton.

The Mules, who made 14 3-pointers, took a 23-8 lead after one quarter.

Landon Zoll, who scored a game-high 24 points, made three of his six 3-pointers in the first quarter. Johnny Vaughn made two first-quarter 3s and Blake Harty, who finished with 22 points, made one of his six.

Vaughn and Tyler Suiter finished with 11 points each for Bernie.

The Mules (4-0) led 33-16 at halftime and 62-31 after three quarters.

Naylor 58, Puxico 55

The Naylor boys basketball team held off the Puxico Indians in the fourth quarter to secure a 58-55 victory Tuesday night at Naylor.

Naylor (2-1) carried a 49-38 lead in the fourth quarter where the Indians (1-4) held a 17-9 scoring advantage.

Lucas Plunkett scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. Ethan Helm scored eight of his 14 in the first quarter where the Indians took a 19-15 lead.

Naylor outscored the Indians 24-9 in the second quarter to take a 39-28 halftime lead.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Vincent 61, Advance 37

The St. Vincent girls basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Advance Hornets 61-37 Tuesday night at Perryville, ending the Hornets’ four-game win streak.

St. Vincent held quarter leads of 11-6, 28-23 and 41-35 before outscoring the Hornets 20-2 in the fourth.

Alandry Below scored a game-high 27 points for Advance, who fell to 4-2. She made three 3-pointers and went 6 for 10 from the free-throw line.
