Southeast Missouri State volleyball prevails in five sets at Saint Louis University

The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team used a 6-1 run in the fifth set to seize control on its way to a road victory Tuesday over Saint Louis University.

The Redhawks won 25-23, 18-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-12 in improving to 5-6 on the season.

With the deciding rally match tied at 2-2, Laney Malloy, Annie Wehrheim and Tara Beilsmith put down kills to give Southeast a 5-2 lead. After a service error, Southeast reeled off the next three points for an 8-3 advantage, and the Billikens never recovered.

SLU (6-4) had won a tight fourth set in which the teams were tied five times, the last time at 17-17.

Mikayla Kuhlmann led the Redhawks with 17 kills, while Malloy finished with 16 and Wehrheim had 11. Beilsmith had a match-high five aces and 20 digs, while teammate Krista Berns led all players with six blocks and Claire Ochs posted a match-high 46 digs.

SLU's Sien Gallop had 24 kills and Maya Taylor had 18.

Southeast returns to action Friday at the Memphis Invitational with a 12:30 p.m. match against Toledo and a 4:30 match against North Alabama. It will conclude tournament action with a 1 p.m. match Saturday against host Memphis.
