SD ROUNDUP: NMCC baseball gains early lead, loses late to Scott City; Lily Johnson strikes out 10 for NMCC softball

NEW MADRID, Mo. — New Madrid County Central held on to a 2-1 lead through four innings of play.

The late innings, though, came to back to bite the Eagles as Scott city scored 11 unanswered runs to run away with a 12-3 win over NMCC.

John Michael Stanley and Caden Howell each had impressive days for the Eagles. Stanley went 2-for-3, while Howell went 2-for-4.

On the opposite side, the Rams lineup was too much to halt, as they pounded out 10 hits.

Notre Dame 11, Charleston 3

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Tanner Ray got the Charleston baseball team on the board early, during Monday’s game against Notre Dame.

Ray hit the 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence at Notre Dame Regional High School for a home run. The Bulldogs responded, though, with three runs in the bottom of the first, as they went on to win 11-3.

Zach Haygood was a tough pitcher to figure out, as he went a full seven inning, giving up four hits on three earned runs and striking out seven.

BELL CITY, Mo. — The Kelly baseball team scored three runs in the top of the first inning, more than enough to come away with a 5-1 win over Bell City on Monday.

Peyton Eftink went 2-for-4, with a double, while Grant Menz also went 2-for-4 with a double.

Menz also started on the mound for the Hawks, but went just one inning, before Gavin Jansen and Drew Dirnberger finished off the game.

Kelly only allowed two hits the entire night.

Oran 13, Woodland 4

MARBLE HILL, Mo. — The first four batters for the Oran baseball team went a combined 9-for-17 at the plate on Monday against Woodland.

Cruising to a 13-4 win, the top of the order proved to be a lethal combination for the defending Class 1 state champions.

Additionally, Kaden Hargrove provided a quality outing on the mound for the Eagles as well. He pitched five innings of six-hit ball, giving up three earned runs and striking out four.

Poplar Bluff Invitational

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. — Austin Crawford shot an 85, as the Sikeston boys golf team shot 383 in the Poplar Bluff Invitational on Monday at Westwood Hills County Club.

Jackson took home the team title and medalist honors, as the Indians shot 285, and Case Englehart shot a two-under-par 69.

NMCC 9, Dexter 0

NEW MADRID, Mo. — It was another gem of a performance for New Madrid County Central’s Lily Johnson on Monday.

Johnson pitched a two-hit shutout over Dexter, as she struck out 10.

The top of the order helped her out too, as Maggie Sutton went 2-for-4 and Carson Cooper went 3-for-3.

Alivia Hartman went 2-for-4, and Johnson added to the cause with a 2-for-4 game as well.

ELLSINORE, Mo. — It was a tough afternoon for the East Prairie softball team on Monday.

The Lady Eagles fell to East Carter 16-0, in four innings.

East Carter scored all of its runs from the second to the fourth innings, as the Lady Redbirds muscled nine hits.

The Lady Eagles went on to defeat Woodland 12-1, behind the senior duo at the top of the order.

Kaylee Payne pitched a stellar game as well. She went a full seven innings, giving up seven hits on one earned run and striking out three.

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — An 11-run second inning broke the game wide open for the Portageville softball team on Monday.

Madelyn White led the Lady Bulldogs, going 4-for-4 and Callie Roberts went 2-for-2 with four RBI, as Portageville defeated South Pemiscot 16-1.

Advance 14, Scott County Central 3, (5 inn.)

SIKESTON — Advance (5-7) dominated the entirety of its game against Scott County Central (1-7) on Monday. The Hornets scored all 14 of their runs in the first four innings to put away SCC early. Addie Curtis led the Hornets with a 2-of-4 day and two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Alli Johnson pitched all five innings and allowed seven hits, three earned runs with nine strikeouts.

Bernie 10, Scott City 9

SCOTT CITY, Mo. — The Bernie softball team scored an important pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to knock off the top-ranked and previously undefeated Rams 10-9 Monday at Scott City.

The Mules scored two runs in the first inning and six in the second to take an 8-0 lead, but Scott City (8-1) scored three in the third and two in the fourth to slice their lead to 8-5.

Taylor Anthony and Cassidy Freed hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to give the Mules a 10-5 lead going into the home half of the seventh.

Scott City scored four in the seventh, but Alyson Marcum relieved Freed with the winning run at first base and two outs by striking out Courtney Enderle to end the game and record the save.

Bernie used a balanced nine-hit attack to improve to 15-2.

GIRL’S SOCCER

Hillsboro 5, Kelly 1

HILLSBORO, Mo. — Lynsey Powers scored the only goal for the Kelly girl’s soccer team on Monday.

The Lady Hawks lost 5-1, as Lauren Kuehn, Abby Schacht, Payton Kuehn, Breanna Sebaugh, and Faith Wilson all scored for Hillsboro.
