SENATH, Mo. - The Kennett Indians softball team scored in all five innings it batted as it beat the Senath-Hornersville Lions 12-0 in five innings Monday.

Kennett drove home one run in the first inning, five runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning, three runs in the fourth inning, and one run in the fifth inning.

“Today was a conference game against a rival,” Kennett coach Kevin McCaig said. “Their girls were fired up to play and we were a little antsy the first time through the lineup and hit some balls off the end of the bat. After that, we slowed down a little bit and started to drive the ball up the middle and it turned out to be a good day."

Kennett leadoff hitter Kyra Jaco paced her team’s offense. Jaco finished 2 for 2 with three RBIs.

Sydni McAtee added a hit and two RBIs and Claira Green recorded a pair of hits and one RBI for the Indians. Olivia Orf, Kaytie Hurst, Anelle Harris, and Hannah Davis added one RBI each for Kennett.

Harris pitched the first three innings before Emillie Johnson pitched the final two frames for the Indians.

Hannah Johnson pitched all five innings for Senath-Hornersville.

The Lions managed to break up a no-hitter when Sissy Johnson collected a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senath-Hornersville put another runner on base when Hanna Carter drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth inning but never scored.

“We just couldn’t get clutch hits today and made error after error on the field,” Senath-Hornersville softball coach Leigha Woody said. “We kicked it into gear as the game progressed. It could have been a closer game if we had started off stronger but it just didn’t work out for us today."

Kennett (5-3) visits Caruthersville Tuesday, travels to Scott City Wednesday, hosts New Madrid County Central Friday, and plays Holcomb Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Swing Pink Tournament in Dexter.

“We want to play softball,” McCaig said. “We want to play as much as we can after practicing so much the first three weeks. The girls want to play and the only way to get better is to keep playing and see what we need to fix.”

Senath-Hornersville (2-5) hosts Caruthersville Friday before it begins play in the Swing Pink Tournament at Dexter Saturday. Senath-Hornersville is slated to take on Risco at 9 a.m., host Dexter at 3 p.m., and East Prairie Saturday at 7 p.m. at the 22-team event.

"I think as long we keep our heads in it we will be all right moving forward," Woody said. "We are the one seed in our division in the Swing Pink Tournament. The teams in our division should be pretty closely matched. It should be good competition for us and we will see what happens."
