EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. — It was a successful Eva G. Hinshaw Invitational for the Sikeston boys and girls track and field teams on Thursday.

Both teams finished in the top three in total team points, while five individuals won their respective events.

Sikeston finished second to McCracken County (139 points) in 18 girls’ events, with 110.50 points.

Tyennia Stevens won the girls high jump with a jump of five feet, while Emma Jones won the 400-meter run, at 1:06.91.

Sikeston also won the 4x100-meter relay, as the team of T’Kaila Freeman, Jones, Krisstina Morrow, and Caroline Steward edged Kennett 53-53.40.

On the boys’ side, Kennett downed Sikeston 166-100.50.

Daniel Lawrence earned first-place honors in the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 16.47 seconds.

Keon Graham won the 300-meter hurdles, as he edged Charleston’s Blessin Kimble 41.94-44.13.

“I thought we competed well,” Sikeston head coach Kollin Groves said. “It was the first time we had a medal meet this season, and showed some good performances, especially in the field events. Did well in the jumps, high jump throws; I think that’s where we’ll excel at this season. Then, hopefully, we can score some points on the track as well. I thought our relays showed some promise and we have some open events, that I think the kids can excel at as well. Our hurlers are really coming along, and I think they’ll have phenomenal seasons.”

19 teams headlined the field this year, at East Prairie High School — one more than last season — and is an event that East Prairie head coach Chad Jamerson said has been a draw to many teams.

“The Hinshaw has actually been a good-sized meet, since its inception nine seasons ago,” Jamerson said. “First season, it was created to memorialize a great member of our community, in Eva G. Hinshaw. She was our former athletic director and a good, Christian woman that really cared about our kids. Over the years, it’s really grown from a team meet that was about 15 teams to, fortunately, this year, having 19 teams.

“The competition just seems to grow and grow, and we’re trying to do things each year to make it a little bit more fun, a little bit more exciting. Playing music throughout the meet, trying to get the crowd into it, just anything we can do to make track and field exciting again in Southeast Missouri and open some eyes around here.”

One of the more exciting events that Jamerson mentioned happened toward the end of the meet, when he put together the “Cheeseburger Run,” where field athletes ran on the track, with the winner from both the boys and girls side winning a cheeseburger.

Garnering the idea from Plainfield North High School, Jamerson said that he takes the top shot putters from the boys’ division and the girls’ division, and they run a race for a cheeseburger from a local restaurant.
