Southeast Missouri State baseball falls 4-2 to Austin Peay in opener of series

The first game under the lights did not go as planned for the Southeast Missouri State baseball team. After overcoming a deficit to beat Memphis earlier in the week, they could not replicate the task dropping a 4-2 decision against Austin Peay University in front of more than 1,200 spectators at Capaha Field.

With the brand new LED lights on display, the Redhawks (12-10, 2-5 OVC) could not recover after falling into an early hole. Austin Peay struck first in the second inning, when John McDonald singled to right with the bases loaded, scoring Garrett Spain for a 1-0 lead.

The Governors had similar success in their next two at-bats as Matt Joslin and Bobby Head both had RBI singles. Garrett Kueber finished the scoring on a fielder's choice to make it 4-0, before Southeast recorded the final out.

On the offensive side, Southeast threatened multiple times, but could not deliver.

Southeast got on the board in the fourth inning when Danny Wright hit a triple off the wall in right-center field and scored when sophomnore Tyler Wilber singled. However, they would not be able to add more in the inning, hitting into a double play.

In the fifth inning, Hunter Southerland doubled with one out and later scored on a two-out single by Connor Basler to make it 4-2. However, Devon Wilson struck out looking with two runners aboard.

The Redhawks hit into double plays to end the third and fourth innings. They also left a total of seven runners on base.

"We had chances, double plays hurt early, then we got punched out in the fifth," Southeast coach Andy Sawyers said. "That was probably our last best shot to press back."

The Rehawks threatened one last time in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases on three walks. However, they again could not produce as Governors pitcher Ryan Kouba recorded three strikeouts to end the threat.

Dylan Dodd (4-2) took the loss for Southeast.

Southeast and Austin Peay will resume the series at 2 p.m. Saturday and conclude play with a 1 p.m contest Sunday.
