HOLCOMB, Mo. - Senath-Hornersville Lions basketball coach Corbin Clark placed an increased emphasis on pounding the ball in the paint after his varsity squad suffered a 63-55 loss to host Gideon in the third-place game of the Bulldog Classic Friday night.

“We made it an emphasis at practice over the weekend to stop settling for perimeter shots,” Clark said. “Our last game of the Bulldog Classic we shot over 25 3’s when I felt like we had a matchup advantage in the post. I felt like all those perimeter shots hurt our chances of beating Gideon and we made it an emphasis tonight to get the ball inside. We’ve got guys who can shoot it but we wanted to get looks inside tonight.”

The Lions pounded the ball inside early and often in its road contest against the Holcomb Hornets Tuesday night. Senath-Hornersville finished with 38 2-pointers and just three treys as it secured a comfortable 93-52 road victory against Holcomb.

“Holcomb plays a really different style from most teams and they tend to make you speed up a little more than you are comfortable with,” Clark said. “But tonight we were able to keep our eyes up and hit our guys at the back end of their press and get some easy shots on offense.”

Holcomb jumped out to an early 8-2 lead less than two minutes into the first quarter when it scored eight unanswered points when Nate Rhew and Ben Maynard both connected for a 3-pointer and Logan Williamson added a 2-pointer.

Senath-Hornersville followed with the next 17 points to move ahead 19-8 by the 2:30 mark of the first quarter. The Lions increased its lead to 28-14 by the start of the second quarter, led 53-29 at halftime, and enjoyed an 80-47 lead by the start of the start of the fourth quarter.

“We usually play good for 45-second spans and then look like we haven’t ever played before for the following three minutes,” Holcomb coach Chris Hahn said. “We started off well but it’s tough to keep pace for four quarters playing all these young guys against these older kids.”

Senath-Hornersville junior forward Isaii Lopez finished with a game-high 19 points. He recorded a team-high eight 2-pointers and made three of five free throws.

Landon King add 13 points, Joaquin Maldonado tallied 12 points, and Orlando Coronado finished with 10 points. Seven other players scored in single digits for Senath-Hornersville.

Eli Morgan hit a team-high four treys. He paced Holcomb with 13 points.

Nine of the 15 field goals Holcomb recorded were 3-pointers.

“I thought we were pretty timid with the ball and didn’t attack hard,” Hahn said. “That led to us not getting many shots close to the basket. I think we were a little intimidated tonight.”

Holcomb (0-5) is off until Dec. 13 when it visits Hayti.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do right now,” Hahn said. “They will get some time away from basketball to regroup and rest. Then we will try to hit it hard on Monday to prepare for Hayti, which will be pretty good.”

Senath-Hornersville (2-2) visits Cooter Thursday before it begins play at its own six-team tournament Monday. No. 1 seeded Senath-Hornersville plays No. 5 seeded Southland Monday at 6 p.m. in pool play. A complete schedule for the tournament is available at this link: Tournament Schedule

“It will be interesting,” Clark said of the tournament. “Campbell will be really tough. Armorel is also always a contender to win that tournament. It will be nice to finally play on our home floor because we’ve been on the road since the season started.”
