Cape Catfish hire Larkin as inaugural coach

Steve Larkin will coach the Cape Catfish during their inaugural season, as the team announced his hiring Tuesday.

The Catfish will begin play in the Prospect League in June 2019 at Capaha Field.

Larkin, the brother of Baseball Hall of Farmer and former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, has coached in the Prospect League for the last three years.

Last summer, Steve Larkin was the hitting and infield/outfield coach for the Chillicothe Paints, helping lead them to a 34-26 record, second-place finish in the East Division and a playoff appearance.

"I'm looking forward to this opportunity. I have worked around a lot of good people and am excited to coach this club," Larkin said in a news release. "I can't wait to start building relationships with our staff, players and coaches as we lay the foundation for the Cape Catfish."

After playing college baseball at Texas and appearing on two teams advancing to the College World Series, the Texas Rangers picked Larkin in the 10th round of the 1994 Major League Baseball Draft.

He was traded to the Reds in 1996 and two years later made his sole appearance in an MLB game.

On Sept. 27, 1998, Steve Larkin played first base and Barry Larkin played shortstop for the Reds against the Pirates, who also started a pair of brothers in Bret And Aaron Boone.

It was the only time in MLB history two sets of siblings have played together in the same game.

Larkin spent the next two seasons in the minor leagues both playing independent professional baseball from 2001-05.

"We are very pleased to find a guy with a background that Steve has," Catfish General Manager Mark Hogan said. "We feel very fortunate to get a person with the experience he has inside the Prospect League which we think will give our players a great start."
